The antibacterial medicine, Trimethoprim works by sourcing and killing bacteria. Trimethoprim 200mg tablets are used to treat a variety of infections, from urinary infections and respiratory tract infections to long-term prevention of persistent urinary tract infections.

Trimethoprim 200mg should not be stored over 25 degress Celcius. It should be kept out of reach and sight of children.

Take Trimethoprim medicine with a glass of water and swallow. In addition, make sure to take your medication at the same time every day. The dose is one tablet twice each day.

The active ingredient in these tablets is Trimethoprim. The other ingredients are Lactose Monohydrate, Maize Starch, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Sodium Starch Glycolate (Type A), Povidone, Colloidal Anhydrous Silica, Magnesium Stearate and Stearic Acid.

Do not take Trimethoprim 200mg tablets if you:

  • are allergic (hypersensitive) to trimethoprim or any of the other ingredients in the tablet
  • are pregnant
  • have any blood disorder
  • have severe kidney disease
  • Trimethoprim medicine should not be given to premature babies or babies during the first few weeks of life
  • kidney disease or are having dialysis treatment
  • a deficiency of folic acid (may cause anaemia)

If you are taking other medicines inform your doctor or pharmacist. In turn, you must also make your doctor aware if you have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.These include:

  • antibiotics such as rifampicin
  • anticoagulants to prevent your blood clotting such as warfarin
  • ciclosporin (to prevent rejection after transplantation)
  • digoxin (to treat heart conditions)
  • phenytoin (to treat epilepsy)
  • pyrimethamine (to treat malaria)
  • bone marrow depressants

Trimethoprim 200mg tablets should not be used in pregnancy. Therefore, if you are breast-feeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medication. Trimethoprim contains a type of sugar names lactose, hence if you have been told you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.
