A migraine can severely affect your quality of life and prevent you from carrying out your usual daily activities. However, there are a number of effective treatments. Simply select your medication, take an online consultation with our Doctor and if suitable we will post your medication directly to you from our pharmacy. If you already have a prescription, then please send it to us. Our Pharmacist will then dispense the appropriate medicine.

Migraines - How To Treat Them, The Types and What Causes Them

Migraines are severe headaches, with a throbbing pain at the side or front of the head. Some people also experience vomiting, nausea and sensitivity to noise or light. Migraines are more common in women, with one in five women and one in fifteen men getting them. They normally start in early adulthood.

Migraines can be treated and controlled with a number of painkillers and nasal sprays as above. There are three main types of medication:-

  • Painkillers to control headache
  • Anti-emetics to reduce vomiting and nausea
  • Triptans to reverse the changes in the brain that cause migraines

Some people find that lying or sleeping in a darkened room helps.

The most common forms of migraine are:-

  • Migraine with aura - there are warning signs of flashing lights
  • Migraine without aura - no warning signs
  • Migraine aura without headache - also known as a silent migraine when migraine symptoms are experienced, but no headache

The Causes & Prevention

Migraines are often triggered by stress, the start of a period, tiredness and particular foods and drink. Genetics play some part, as if a close relative is a sufferer, then you have a 50% chance of also having migraines.

If your migraine is triggered by stress, foods or drink, then avoidance is key. Adopt a healthy life style including regular exercise, plenty of sleep, avoid caffeine and alcohol, eat and rehydrate regularly.

Your medication may also help you to avoid migraines.

Support and information

There are many sources of information and support for migraine sufferers including:
