First, get a pedometer, or the equivalent of one, and figure out how many steps you are already walking in a day. Remember, steady and gradual increases will help your goal become more achieveable - so try to add 300 steps everyday, rather than jumping from 3000 to 10,000 immediately.
If you catch the bus home at the moment, why not get off a stop earlier and walk that extra distance? Or where possible, switch from a short car journey to a walk instead. Do you usually drive to the shop around the corner because it's more convenient? Choose to walk instead. Small lifestyle choices can make a huge difference on your overall health and fitness.
Admittedly, walking alone can be boring, so why not ask a friend to tag along? The chances are you will get chatting and rack up those steps with ease if you're not thinking about it. Before you know it you've been stationary for hours, when you could have easily increased your step count by walking to the kitchen, or going for a short walk outside. Try setting reminders on your phone every hour so that you remember to step away from what you're doing - It will benefit not only your body but your mind too.
