Eyelash growth serums have gained immense popularity due to their ability to naturally enhance lashes, making them look fuller and longer.
The beauty industry experienced a significant boost when the prescription drug bimatoprost (Lumigan), originally designed to treat glaucoma, unexpectedly exhibited a side effect of promoting eyelash growth. Recognising this potential, drug manufacturers extracted the active ingredient responsible for the growth, known as prostaglandin analog, and starting in America formulated a prescription-only serum tailored specifically for enhancing eyelashes, named Latassi. Bimatoprost is also available as the generic version of this medicine.
To apply the serum, a specialised applicator is used to draw bimatoprost along the upper eyelash line. This method ensures that only a small amount comes into contact with the eye, reducing the risk of adverse reactions. However, some individuals may still experience side effects, such as:
- Redness, dryness, or itching in the eyes
- Swelling or irritation of the eyes and eyelids
- Darkening of the skin on the eyelids
- Brown pigmentation in the iris of the eye
- Allergic reactions
Most of these issues resolve once you discontinue using the serum, except for the brown pigment in the iris of the eye, which tends to be a permanent change.
