Protopic ointment contains Tacrolimus 0.03% ointment which is an immunomodulator.
Protopic 0.03% ointment is used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults who have not responded adequately to or are intolerant of conventional therapies such as topical corticosteroids, as well as in children (2 years of age and older) who have not responded adequately to conventional therapies such as topical corticosteroids.
Once moderate to severe atopic dermatitis is cleared or nearly cleared after up to 6 weeks of flare treatment, and if you are experiencing frequent flares (i.e. 4 or more per year), using Protopic 0.03% ointment twice weekly may be able to prevent flares from returning or prolong the time you are free from flares.
Atopic dermatitis is caused by an overreaction of the skin's immune system, which results in skin inflammation (itchiness, redness, and dryness). Protopic modifies the aberrant immune response and alleviates skin inflammation and itching.
