What is Azithromycin?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic treatment for a wide range of bacterial infections. These include nose, chest and throat infections (such as pneumonia or bronchitis), skin infections, ear infections and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as non-specific urethritis (NSU), chlamydia, mycoplasma and ureaplasma.
You can buy azithromycin online through the Oxford Online Pharmacy.
What does Azithromycin do?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic from the macrolides group that is used to treat bacterial infections.
Bacteria need certain proteins in order to survive and multiply. The way Azithromycin works, is it stops bacterial cells from producing these proteins, thus preventing them from spreading further.
The body’s immune system is then able to destroy the remaining bacteria, curing the infection.
Who can take Azithromycin?
Azithromycin is safe to take for adults (we do not prescribe for children - please contact your GP)
If you have tested positive for chlamydia, as it is sexually transmitted, it is important that both you and your partner are tested for this as well as other STIs. This is known as partner notification. If you wish and with your permission, we can contact your partner for you without mentioning your name. Some of your previous partners may also need testing – you will be advised about this.
You should not buy Azithromycin if you:
•Are allergic to macrolide antibiotics or any of the ingredients in the tablets.
•Have/had problems with your kidneys, liver or heart (such as arrhythmia or heart failure)
•Have low levels of magnesium or potassium
•Suffer from myasthenia (a muscle condition)

I’m taking other medicine, is it compatible with Azithromycin?
If you’re taking any other medication, please check with your doctor to see if they are compatible.
The following is a list of medicines that may not mix well with Azithromycin:
•Amiodarone, sotalol or other medicine for irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
•Antidepressants (especially those that can affect your heartbeat, such as citalopram)
•Other antibiotics, such as rifabutin
•Antacids for indigestion

•HIV medicine, such as nelfinavir
There have been no recorded issues when taking herbal remedies with Azithromycin. However, it is best to tell your doctor anything else you may be taking, including vitamins, food supplements or alternative remedies.
What is the recommend dosage for Azithromycin?
After you buy Azithromycin, the packet will contain 4 tablets. You should take TWO tablets orally at the same time on day 1 then ONE daily daily on days 2 and 3. One packet should be enough for your symptoms to clear.
You can retest yourself one week after treatment and if your symptoms persist, you may need to take another dose. Please check with your doctor.
If you’re taking Azithromycin as chlamydia treatment, please make sure that all of your sexual partners are tested and treated (if necessary) as well. To ensure that the chlamydia infection is cured, patients and their treated partners are advised not to have sex for a week. This includes oral sex and sex with condoms.
If you accidentally take an extra dose of Azithromycin, it may increase the chance of temporary side effects, such as diarrhoea or vomiting. If symptoms persist or if you’ve taken more than 4 doses, consult with your doctor.
Is Azithromycin safe to take during pregnancy?
Typically, Azithromycin is not recommended when you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. However, if you are pregnant and have caught chlamydia, then chlamydia tablets may be prescribed if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Chlamydia can be caught by pregnant women and it is important that it is treated to prevent the baby catching the infection during childbirth. In new-born babies chlamydia may cause redness of the eyes (conjunctivitis) or inflammation of the lungs (pneumonia). Treatment of pregnant women makes sure that baby does not catch the infection.
It is advised that you talk to your doctor before taking Azithromycin if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to get pregnant.
