New GLP-1 weight loss tablets are generating a lot of excitement. For many people, the idea of achieving Wegovy-like weight loss without injections sounds almost too good to be true.
Early clinical trial results are promising, with some GLP-1 pills producing weight loss that approaches current injectable treatments. But whether they deliver the same results in real life depends on how consistently they are taken and whether patients can follow the administration instructions correctly.

So, are GLP-1 tablets as effective as injections?
How much weight loss can you get with GLP-1 tablets?
The amount of weight loss you can expect from GLP-1 tablets depends on which tablet you’re talking about:
Oral Semaglutide – the active ingredient used in Wegovy injections in tablet form
Orforglipron – a new GLP-1 medicine sold under the brand name Foundayo in the USA
In clinical trials, people taking the highest dose of oral Semaglutide lost an average of 14 to 17% of their starting weight over 64 weeks (1). Meanwhile, participants taking higher doses of Orforglipron lost an average of around 12% of their starting body weight over 72 weeks (2).
This is significantly more weight loss than traditional oral medications like Orlistat, and suggests both are highly effective options for people living with obesity. But how do they compare to injections?
How does this compare with weight loss from injections?
Once again, it depends on which tablet and injection you’re comparing. Clinical trials have reported average weight loss from starting weight of around:
15-17% with standard-dose Wegovy injections (2.4mg) (3)
19-21% with higher-dose Wegovy injections (7.2mg) (4)
20-22.5% or more with the highest dose of Mounjaro (15mg) (5)
This suggests that oral semaglutide may be capable of producing weight loss similar to the standard 2.4mg Wegovy injection. But higher-dose Wegovy and Mounjaro currently appear to produce greater average weight loss than either the Wegovy pill or Orforglipron.
As these results come from separate trials, they should be viewed as general trends rather than direct comparisons. The main takeaway is that some GLP-1 tablets could match the weight loss seen with standard-dose Wegovy, while injections still appear to offer the highest weight loss potential.
Why don’t real-world results always match clinical trials?
Clinical trials show us what treatments can achieve, but they don't predict exactly your real-world GLP-1 treatment results because:
Everyone responds differently — Trial averages are just that: averages. Some people lose significantly more weight, while others lose less.
Trial averages are often based on higher doses — many results come from people on the highest maintenance dose tested. In real life, some people stay on lower doses because of side effects or because they are already seeing good results.
Lifestyle support is part of treatment — GLP-1 medications are prescribed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Trial participants also usually receive regular lifestyle advice and follow-up, which can contribute to their results.
Consistency matters — results assume the medication is taken exactly as prescribed. This can be harder with treatments that require daily dosing or specific timing instructions.
Why might tablets be harder to take correctly?
Unlike Wegovy and Mounjaro injections, which are taken once a week, GLP-1 tablets must be taken every day. This makes it easier to miss doses and potentially affect weight loss outcomes.
The Wegovy tablet also has strict timing instructions. It must be taken (6):
On an empty stomach first thing in the morning
With no more than 120ml of plain water
At least 30 minutes before food, drinks, or other medications.
If these instructions aren't followed, less medicine may be absorbed, meaning it may not work as well as it should. Orforglipron doesn't have the same timing restrictions, which could make it easier to take correctly in everyday life despite producing lower average weight loss in trials. You can find out how Orforglipron is taken in our 'What is Orforglipron?' guide.
On the other hand, weight loss injections offer more predictable absorption and may be easier for some people to take consistently over the long-term.
So, are GLP-1 tablets as effective as injections?
For some people, they could be. While higher-dose Wegovy and Mounjaro appear to offer greater weight loss than GLP-1 pills, oral Semaglutide may produce similar weight loss to standard-dose Wegovy injections. But it’s important to look beyond the headline figures.
The most effective treatment isn't always the one with the highest average weight loss in a clinical trial. It's one that you can take consistently over the long term, because consistency is what makes real weight loss possible. For some people, that may be a weekly injection. For others, a daily tablet may be simpler to use and therefore more effective in practice.
