Product Information for Wegovy Weight Loss Injections
Get to know the Wegovy Pen
Wegovy (Semaglutide) is licensed in the UK for weight loss and weight maintenance, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity (1).
In a clinical trial, patients on the 7.2mg maintenance dose lost on average 19 to 21% of their starting body weight, with around 1 in 3 achieving over 25% (1-2). More than 9 out of 10 patients achieved clinically meaningful weight loss of 5% or more (2).
In a clinical trial, patients on 2.4mg maintenance dose lost on average 15-17% body weight reduction (vs 2.4% with placebo) (3).
Patients can reach a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg after a gradual 16-week dose escalation. For adults living with obesity (BMI of 30 or above), the dose can then be increased to 7.2 mg (administered as 3 injections of 2.4 mg) after a minimum of 4 weeks on 2.4 mg (1).
At the 2.4 mg maintenance dose, each pen is designed to last one month. Patients on the 7.2mg dose will require 3 doses of the 2.4mg pen per week (1).
Sourced direct from manufacturer (Novo Nordisk) (1).
Wegovy FlexTouch Pen key facts
Self-inject Wegovy at home once a week. Using its very fine needle, inject just under the skin in either your stomach area, thigh or upper arm – whichever you prefer.
Filled with 4 doses, each pen is designed to last a month (4x once weekly injections).
Always make sure to read the user instructions in the second half of the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with the pen.
How do Wegovy injections work?
Wegovy injections work by mimicking the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) hormone your body naturally makes. This hormone targets brain areas involved in regulating appetite (hunger) and blood sugar. This can help you eat fewer calories and lose weight.
How Wegovy works with your body
Wegovy weight loss medication works with your body to help you lose weight, rather than against it. It’s most effective when used alongside a balanced, healthy diet and increased physical activity.
Minimises cravings: Wegovy can reduce food cravings (or food noise) for high-fat foods, helping you eat a more balanced and healthier diet.
Reduces blood sugar levels: When blood sugar levels are high (often after eating certain foods), it promotes the release of insulin to reduce blood sugar levels. This prevents excess sugar being stored as fat.
Makes you feel full: Wegovy works on the part of the brain that controls hunger, helping you feel full sooner and reducing how much you eat.
Slows digestion: Wegovy slows the speed at which food moves through the stomach, helping prevent blood sugar spokes after meals - keeping you feeling fuller. This helps reduce the urge to snack.
Understand who can use Wegovy
Wegovy might not be suitable for everyone. Our team follows strict clinical guidelines when assessing patients for treatment, including a thorough review of past medical history.
If you meet the criteria below, Wegovy may be a suitable treatment for you, but this isn’t guaranteed.
Adults aged 18-85 (clinical experience in patients over 75 is more limited)
Those with a BMI above 30 if you don’t have any weight-related health conditions
Those with a BMI above 27 and a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some other health conditions
This list is only intended as in indicator for who might be suitable for treatment. The doctor will complete a full medical review of your consultation when considering you for treatment.
Use this NHS tool to calculate your BMI.
Who can’t use Wegovy?
Wegovy isn't suitable for everyone which is why our prescribers will review your full medical history during your consultation.
You shouldn't use Wegovy if you are allergic to Semaglutide or any of the other ingredients in the pen (disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol, sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid, water for injection).
You also shouldn't use Wegovy if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. If you're planning to conceive, you must stop taking Wegovy at least 2 months beforehand.
Any other health conditions that may require caution when taking Wegovy or specialist review will always be decided with your prescriber.
Weight loss results with Wegovy
The Wegovy FlexTouch pen comes in 6 dosage options. You’ll start weekly treatment on the lowest 0.25mg strength and gradually increase each month towards the 2.4mg strength, you can progress to the 7.2mg dose if your starting BMI was over 30. This step-by-step approach lets your body adapt to the medication gradually.
A range of studies have shown achievable weight loss of 5-20% with weekly Wegovy injections. Wegovy is a longer-term weight management treatment, and you should start to see weight loss within 4-6 weeks of starting treatment.
Weight loss examples
In a 2025 clinical trial, participants received either Wegovy 7.2 mg, Wegovy 2.4 mg, or placebo once weekly, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Results found:
Wegovy 7.2 mg at 72 weeks:
19-21% average weight loss reduction
90.7% of patients achieved weight loss of 5% or more
47.7% of patients achieved weight loss of 20% or more
31.2% of patients achieved weight loss of 25% or more
Wegovy 2.4 mg at 72 weeks:
15-17% average weight loss reduction
89.9% of patients achieved weight loss of 5% or more
33.3% of patients achieved weight loss of 20% or more
15.3% of patients achieved weight loss of 25% or more
Remember, studies are an indicator of what may be achieved and based on perfect adherence to diet, exercise and accurate dosing. Every weight loss journey is unique and might not happen as detailed above.
Our expert team is on-hand to help support your weight journey and give you advice on how to lose weight meaningfully and safely.
What are the cardiovascular benefits of Wegovy?
Beyond the weight loss benefits, Wegovy also has a separate licensed indication for reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
In a clinical trial comparing participants receiving Wegovy 2.4mg vs placebo, results showed a:
20% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events (CV death, non-fatal heart attack, or non-fatal stroke)
28% reduction in fatal or non-fatal heart attack
19% reduction in all-cause mortality
Reductions in blood pressure, waist circumference, and cholesterol at 104 weeks
For people with obesity or overweight who already have heart disease, Wegovy can directly reduce the risk of life-threatening cardiovascular events (14). Wegovy is not a substitute for existing heart medications, so consultation with your doctor or prescriber is always required.
Advisory information
For menopausal women taking HRT, you should consider changing oral oestrogen to transdermal oestrogen and also increasing dose of progesterone for 4 weeks after initiation of a GLP-1 or after any dose change. You should discuss this further with your GP or prescribing Doctor.
For women using oral contraceptives, based on current evidence, Wegovy (Semaglutide) does not reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Research has shown that Semaglutide doesn't significantly affect how well birth control pills are absorbed or work in your body.
While Wegovy itself doesn't interfere with contraceptive effectiveness, common side effects like vomiting or diarrhea can affect oral contraception. If you vomit within 3-4 hours of taking your pill or experience severe diarrhea, the hormones may not be fully absorbed. In these cases, you should use backup contraception (like condoms) until you've been symptom-free for about a week.
Wegovy is not suitable if you are planning to get pregnant, pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are planning on getting pregnant, make sure you have completely stopped using Wegovy at least 2 months before trying to conceive. Women of childbearing age should be on some form of contraception as the effects on the foetus are not yet known. If you have any concerns, speak to a healthcare professional.
If you have any concerns, speak to our team or a healthcare professional.

Wegovy FlexTouch delivery and storage
As of April 2026, the Wegovy FlexTouch Pen can now be delivered without ice packs. The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority) has now approved the delivery of Wegovy in the UK at a temperature below 30°C for up to 48 hours.
Once received it is preferable to store your pen in your fridge (between 2°C to 8°C) as soon as possible after delivery. It should then be kept refrigerated until you open it to administer the first injection. Once opened, it can be stored at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 6 weeks. Always keep it out of direct sunlight and direct heat sources.
When travelling, your FlexTouch pen can be kept at room temperature (up to 30°C) for 6 weeks or you can use a cool bag with an ice pack, where needed. Never pack in your plane hold luggage as the medication may freeze, leaving it unusable.
How to inject Wegovy
It’s normal to be anxious the first time you’re getting ready to inject, but with preparation and practice it’ll become second nature.
Three key stages to injecting include:
Preparing your dose
Injecting your dose
Post-injection
Make sure to thoroughly read and understand the user instructions in the second half of the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with the FlexTouch Pen.
Our top injection tips include:
Reading the user instructions thoroughly
Washing your hands before starting
Choosing your injection site carefully to avoid side effects
Giving yourself plenty of time on your injection day so you aren’t rushed
Using Wegovy 7.2mg (3 x 2.4mg FlexTouch Pens)
If you are still receiving three 2.4mg pens for your 7.2mg dose you will inject three doses of 2.4mg one after each other. The injections can be given in the same body area, like the tummy or thigh, but should be at least 5 cm apart. The needle should be changed between each dose.
If you keep your pen in its original box, you will see four small tick boxes on the back. These are usually ticked off once per week so you know how many doses are left in the pen.
Instead with 7.2mg, we recommend you tick one box after each injection.
This helps you keep track and avoids taking too few or too many doses each week.
Side effects of Wegovy Weight Loss Injections
Below we’ve listed some common and some serious side effects, this list is not exhaustive. You should always read the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medication.
This will usually be in the medication packaging or box, but you can also read it online.
See the Wegovy Patient Information Leaflet.
Common side effects
Side effects can be more common when starting Wegovy, or when increasing your dose. These side effects may affect more than 1 in 10 people who use this treatment.
Nausea
Diarrhoea
Vomiting
Constipation
Stomach (abdomen) pain
Headache
Tiredness (fatigue)
Temporary hair loss
Vision changes
Vision changes
Most people using Wegovy don't experience vision problems, though temporary blurred vision can occur in the first few weeks due to blood sugar changes as your body adjusts to treatment. For those with type 2 diabetes and existing Diabetic Retinopathy, rapid blood sugar improvements can occasionally trigger a flare-up.
If you experience sudden or painful changes to your vision, or changes that don’t ease after a few days, pause treatment and seek a same-day appointment with your optician, or call NHS 111 for out-of-hours care.
Serious side effects
If you experience any of the following types of serious side effects, stop taking Wegovy and contact your doctor immediately:
Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
Inflamed pancreas (acute pancreatitis) which could cause severe pain in the stomach and back which does not go away. You should see a doctor immediately if you experience such symptoms.
Kidney or bladder stones. Signs may include back or lower abdomen pain, difficulty in urination or change in colour of your urine.
Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1000 people)
Severe allergic reactions (eg anaphylactic reaction, angioedema). You should get immediate medical help and inform your doctor if you experience symptoms such as breathing problems, rapid swelling of the lips, tongue and/or throat with difficulty swallowing and a fast heartbeat.
The complete range of side effects are listed in the Wegovy FlexTouch Pen Patient Information Leaflet. Not everyone will experience side effects, but this doesn’t mean the medication isn’t working.
If you would like to talk to our Healthcare Advisors about any concerns around side-effects please call us on 01295 262925 or email help@oxfordop.co.uk.
Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) is a possible side effect with GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual GLP-1/ GIP receptor agonists.
In rare reports this can have serious or fatal outcomes
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience severe, persistent abdominal pain, that may radiate to your back and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting, as this may be a sign of pancreatitis
Do not restart GLP-1 receptor agonist or GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist treatment if pancreatitis is confirmed
Report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme

Every weight loss journey is unique, however, recent studies have shown that people taking Wegovy can lose 17% of starting body weight with 1 in 3 achieving a 20% of starting body weight loss. The manufacturer of Wegovy is currently awaiting MHRA regulatory approval for an additional dose level. In clinical trials, people taking this dose lost an average of 21% of their body weight, with about one-third losing 25% or more. This is comparable with the average 22.5% weight loss of starting body weight in Mounjaro users.
-
Both medicines work similarly, so it comes down to personal preference. For some, using Wegovy may be more effective, and vice versa. They both have a similar mechanism of action as GLP-1 inhibitors, although, the amount of weight you can expect to lose mat be slightly different. If you are unsure, speak to us. We will be happy to advise you so you can make the best decision for you.
-
Yes, you can change from one weight loss medication to another, but this should be done under medical supervision. You’ll need to pause your existing weight loss medication and go through a washout period before taking the new medication. This is to ensure there is no cross over of medications in your system. If you’re thinking about changing, you can explore our switching page and read more about the process.
-
Yes, there are other reported benefits resulting from using Wegovy. These include improvement in pain from knee osteoarthritis, cardiovascular health benefits after 3 months and unlike Mounjaro, Wegovy doesn’t affect the efficacy of oral contraceptives.

-
No, you must start Wegovy with the 0.25mg injection and increase monthly. This is so your body gets used to the medication and it reduces the risk of side effects.
-
You should start to notice a reduced appetite and feeling of fullness after a few days from starting this medicine. However, it can take up to several weeks to see significant weight loss on the scales. The first month or so of treatment can look different for everyone.
However, if you do not notice changes within the first 12 weeks, we suggest contacting one of our dedicated healthcare professionals, who can advise you on the next steps.
-
This all depends on how well you tolerate the dose you are on. If you are taking a strength of Wegovy, you have no side effects and still losing weight, we may advise that you stay on that dose.
On the other hand, if you have increased your dose of Wegovy and you are experiencing unbearable side effects, you may want to consider reducing your dose.
If you have taken a dose of Wegovy for at least 4 weeks, have no side effects and have stopped experiencing weight loss, you may have hit a weight loss plateau and we may consider increasing your dose.
When you request a change of dose our healthcare professionals will consider this and help you make the best and safest decision for you.
-
Wegovy is only injected once weekly, and a missed dose can be taken within five days of the day it is meant to be taken.
If you miss a dose and your next scheduled dose is more than 48 hours away, take the missed dose as soon as possible.
If your next scheduled dose is in less than 48 hours, skip the missed dose and take your next dose as scheduled.
If you miss Wegovy doses for more than two weeks, speak to us for guidance.
-
Nausea is a common side effect of Wegovy and it can be very uncomfortable for some people, that being said, it is uncommon to experience extreme nausea and sickness constantly.
So, how do you stop feeling sick on Wegovy? We suggest you try the following and if it still doesn’t help, you should consult your prescriber for more information:
- Drink plenty of water
- Eat small balanced meals
- Get fresh air regularly
- Stick to a lower dose for as long as it's effective
-
Whilst there isn’t a specific diet to follow, it’s recommended that you follow a healthy & balanced diet. Focus on creating balanced meals that contain adequate protein and fibre. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids too.
You should drink at least 6 - 8 servings of water a day (250ml glass).
Try to avoid drinking with meals as this can cause you to feel too full and stop you from being able to eat your meal. We advise drinking water at least 30 minutes before or after a meal.
Aim for 3 meals a day, with snacks in between if needed, to provide your body with steady energy throughout the day. A balanced meal should look like:
- Filling half your plate with non-starchy vegetables, salad or fruit.
- Filling the other half evenly between wholegrain carbohydrates and lean protein
- Include a small serving of healthy fats within your meal
-
One of the most important steps while using weight loss injections is maintaining a balanced, nutrient-rich diet. Even though you're eating less, choose foods that provide the essential vitamins & minerals your body needs. Prioritise lean proteins, colourful vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats to support your overall health during weight loss.
Rapid weight loss can sometimes lead to side effects like temporary hair loss if your body isn't getting enough nutrition. By focusing on nutrient-dense meals, you can help minimise these effects naturally. If you're finding it challenging to meet your nutritional needs through food alone, oral vitamin supplements can provide additional support:
- Daily multivitamin – to cover any nutritional gaps from reduced food intake
- Biotin, zinc, and selenium (often found in skin, hair and nails formulas) – may help support hair health during weight loss
- Vitamin B complex and iron – can help combat tiredness from lower calorie intake
Remember, supplements should complement a healthy diet, not replace it. If you're concerned about your nutritional intake or experiencing side effects, let us know during your next consultation or contact our team here.
-
Any exercise is great but to get the best results from your weight loss journey you should consider alternating different forms of exercise. Such as light aerobatic exercises like walking and brisk walking or jogging and strength training such as lifting weights and doing squats help build muscle and boost your metabolism.
-
Based on current evidence, Wegovy (Semaglutide) does not reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
-
No, Wegovy is not suitable if any of these apply to you.
If you are planning on getting pregnant, make sure you have completely stopped using Wegovy at least 2 months before trying to conceive.
Women of childbearing age should be on some form of contraception as the effects on the foetus are not yet known.
-
When you stop using Wegovy, you will notice your appetite increasing and returning in full within a few weeks. If you haven't made any necessary lifestyle adjustments, you could regain some of the weight you lost. Regular exercise and healthy eating are two ways to stay on top of your weight loss and prevent regaining it.
-
Once you’ve reached your goal weight, it’s time to decide how to move forward with your weight loss journey. Typically, most people enter what’s called a Maintenance Phase of their journey. This is usually a longer term stage and involves continuing to take Wegovy, but at a lower dose. This is to help maintain the benefits of Wegovy so you can maintain your weight loss, but not lose any more weight.
Other options are this stage include:
- Gradual tapering - reducing your dose gradually and then stopping the medication completely.
- Stop completely - stopping the medication once you reach your weight loss goal and focusing on diet and lifestyle to maintain your weight loss.
-
The Wegovy maintenance phase is the stage where you continue taking a steady dose after gradually increasing from the starting dose and reaching your weight loss goal. The maintenance phase is designed to help you maintain your weight loss over the long-term. It works by keeping your appetite controlled and preventing weight regain.
There's no set time limit with the maintenance phase. You can remain on it for as long as it continues to benefit you. Many people stay on it indefinitely since obesity is considered a chronic condition requiring long-term management.
Important - Before taking any medication, it is always important to read the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL)

Some people taking GLP-1 injections for weight loss have reported temporary blurred vision. This can happen during the first few weeks of treatment and is usually due to changes in blood sugar levels, or dry eyes caused by dehydration.
There’s usually nothing to worry about, but if you experience any sudden or severe changes to your vision, contact your optician immediately (NHS 111 for out-of-hours) and let them know you’re taking a GLP-1 weight loss medication.
