Am I eligible to switch?

Initial eligibility and switching

If you've already been prescribed Mounjaro, then it's likely you'll be able to switch treatment to Wegovy.

You'll need to complete a new online consultation because you're changing from one prescription medication to another. We need to ensure it's the right treatment for you.
Existing patients
New patients
  • Currently prescribed Mounjaro by us
  • Adults aged 18-85 with a BMI of 25 or above
  • Currently prescribed Mounjaro by a UK-registered medical provider
  • Aged 18-85 with a BMI of 30 or above (or a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related condition*)

Don't know your BMI? Work it out here.

* Weight-related conditions can include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some other weight-related health conditions.

A simple 3-step switching process

If a medication is no longer right for you, switching to a suitable alternative shouldn't be complex.

1. Initial eligibility and online consultation

Check the initial eligibility criteria to work out if a switch might be right for you. Then complete an online consultation to apply.

2. Registered doctor review

A GMC-registered doctor will review your information and write a private prescription, if appropriate.

3. We dispense & deliver

Our GPhC-registered pharmacists will dispense your treatment and send it in plain packaging with Royal Mail tracked delivery.

Even if you meet the initial eligibility criteria, your consultation will be reviewed by our
clinical team and is not a guarantee of suitability for switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy.

Preparing to switch

It's important to understand what switching medications means for your weight loss journey and any temporary changes it might bring.

FACT 1
You'll need to pause treatment with a washout period to let Mounjaro leave your system before you can inject your first Wegovy dose.

FACT 2
The washout period depends on your current Mounjaro dose and the severity of any side effects.

FACT 3
You'll need to start your Wegovy treatment on the starting dose of 0.25mg and then begin a monthly titration journey, much like you did with Mounjaro.

Switching FAQs

Your questions answered

Yes, but this should be done under medical supervision and not everyone who wants to switch might be eligible to switch. Both treatments are prescription medications and have their own strict eligibility criteria. Each request to switch will be clinically reviewed by our highly experienced doctors to ensure switching is clinically the right option for you.

Yes, you'll typically need a washout period between medications. For switching between GLP-1 receptor agonists like Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) and Wegovy (Semaglutide), we recommend stopping your current medication and waiting for it to clear your system before starting the new one. This transition period helps avoid potential interactions and allows proper dose titration of the new medication. This can range from 7 days to 4 weeks for some patients - see our handy table below.

Current Mounjaro dose
Required washout period
2.5mg or 5mg
7 days*
7.5mg or 10mg
14 days*
12.5mg or 15mg
28 days
*The washout period may be longer if you’ve experienced severe side effects.

You may experience some appetite changes and potential weight fluctuation during the transition period, as your body adjusts to being without medication temporarily. Some patients notice increased hunger or cravings returning. We can advise on strategies to minimise this, such as maintaining dietary and lifestyle habits established during treatment, and keeping the transition period as brief as safely possible.

Yes, you'll almost always need to start at the manufacturer's recommended starting dose for the new medication, regardless of which dose you were taking previously. Each medication has its own specific dose escalation schedule for safety and tolerability reasons. For example, if switching from Mounjaro 15mg to Wegovy, you'd still start with Wegovy's 0.25mg starting dose and follow the standard titration schedule.

Absolutely. Side effects are one of the most common reasons for switching between weight loss medications. Different medications in the same class can affect people quite differently - for instance, you might experience nausea with one GLP-1 medication but tolerate another much better. It's important to discuss any troublesome side effects with us as an alternative medication might suit you much better.

We recommend giving a new weight loss medication at least 3-4 months at the therapeutic dose to properly assess its effectiveness. This allows time to complete the dose escalation process and reach a stable maintenance dose. Keep track of weight loss, side effects, and overall tolerability compared to your previous medication to help inform decision-making about long-term treatment plans.

Every weight loss journey is unique, however, recent studies have shown that people taking Wegovy can lose 17% of starting body weight with 1 in 3 achieving a 20% of starting body weight loss. The manufacturer of Wegovy is currently awaiting MHRA regulatory approval for an additional dose level. In clinical trials, people taking this dose lost an average of 21% of their body weight, with about one-third losing 25% or more. This is comparable with the average 22.5% weight loss of starting body weight in Mounjaro users.
