Is Mounjaro right for me?
The Mounjaro Kwikpen might be right for you if you want to lose weight and have tried eating less and exercising more before, with or without success.
You can use Mounjaro if you have used other weight loss treatments before (like Orlistat or Wegovy), but you should not use Mounjaro at the same time as any other weight loss treatments.
Mounjaro can be a particularly good match for people who struggle with food cravings, people who feel out of control when it comes to their eating or people who feel like their lives revolve around food.
What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro (drug name Tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine that is proven to support healthy weight loss.
It does this in two ways;
- By making you feel fuller for longer, even if you haven’t eaten very much
- By encouraging your body to break down your fat stores for energy, instead of using the food you eat
Mounjaro comes in a pen-like device and is injected with a very small needle under the skin, once a week. You use this injection on yourself at home and we provide detailed, safe and supportive instructions on how to do this.
Mounjaro is a highly effective weight loss treatment and can help you lose 15% - 20% of your body weight.
How does Mounjaro work for weight loss?
Researchers originally developed Mounjaro to help treat type 2 diabetes by mimicking the hormones GIP and GLP-1. It helps produce insulin, lowers blood sugar levels, and slows digestion to avoid blood sugar spikes after eating. Mounjaro also reduces appetite, causing individuals to consume fewer calories and potentially lose weight.
Unlike the other weight loss pens on the market which only work in 1 way, this weight loss medication works in 2 different ways to help reach your long-term weight loss goal:
- Slow down the emptying of your stomach so you will feel fuller for longer.
- Reduces your appetite, so you will consume fewer calories.
Who can use Mounjaro?
To start Mounjaro, you have to have a BMI above 27, along with other conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some other weight-related health conditions.
If you do not have any weight-related health conditions, your BMI must be over 30 to start Mounjaro.
Please be honest about your weight, you do not usually have to stop treatment once your BMI drops below 27 or 30.
As an online provider, we cannot prescribe Mounjaro to people younger than 18 years old. See your GP (or local pharmacist if you are in England) for a referral into an NHS Weight Management Service instead.
Who cannot use Mounjaro?
You should not use Mounjaro if you are female and planning or trying to get pregnant. If you are already using Mounjaro, you should stop and wait at least ONE MONTH before trying to conceive.
If you are female and using oral contraception, you must use extra barrier contraception like condoms for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after every dose increase.
Before starting Mounjaro injections, you will need to complete our online consultation. This helps us ensure that the injections are safe and appropriate for you and allows us to give you any extra information.
Our team of doctors will do this on the same day for orders placed before 1 pm (excluding public holidays).
In your medical consultation, you must tell us if:
- You take any other medicines, especially; Warfarin, Digoxin, Lithium or medicines for diabetes

Is Mounjaro safe?
Like most medicines, Mounjaro Kwikpen is safe when used as prescribed and with the support of a healthcare professional.
These GLP-1 weight loss medicines still feel quite new which can leave people unsure about using them.
They’re not really that new, they’ve just become more popular, especially since celebrities have talked about how they’ve used Ozempic (another GLP-1 agonist) in the press and on social media.
The first GLP-1 agonist used for weight loss was called Saxenda, and it was approved in 2014 after more than a year in medical trials.
Since Saxenda (drug name Liraglutide) we’ve had Wegovy (drug name Semaglutide) and Mounjaro (drug name Tirzepatide) all approved as medicines to support weight loss in the UK. Before these GLP-1 medicines were approved for supporting weight loss, they were used to reduce blood sugar levels for people with type 2 diabetes. The first GLP-1 drug for treating type 2 diabetes, a medicine called Byetta (drug name Exenatide) was approved for use in 2005.
This means that we have nearly 20 years of effectiveness and safety data for this group of medicines.
Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?
Yes for diabetes, not yet for weight loss.
The Mounjaro Kwikpen can be used for two different conditions - supporting weight loss and lowering blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.
It is available on the NHS for treating type 2 diabetes but not yet for supporting weight loss.
NICE (the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, the body that approves medicines for use by the NHS) is currently reviewing the medicine.
The NHS group making this decision produced its draft guidance in June 2024 and will meet again to discuss it in August 2024. At the moment they plan to give their final decision at the end of October 2024.
Only after that will we know whether Mounjaro has been officially approved for use by the NHS.
This is the normal process for new medicines and usually takes several months, sometimes longer. Because the decision is so important to our population, there has been a lot of extra work and discussion around Mounjaro.
Meanwhile, the SMC (Scottish Medicines Consortium) approved Mounjaro for weight loss in Scotland in June 2024. Patients under NHSScotland can discuss access to Mounjaro via their GP.
If NICE does approve Mounjaro (which is likely), it will probably only be available from specialist weight loss services in England and Wales. At the time of writing (July 2024) there is still no specialist weight management service in Northern Ireland.
To access this service, you need to be referred via your GP, hospital specialist if you are under one, or your community pharmacist (in England).
In the past, to be considered for treatment with a GLP-1 agonist like Mounjaro or Wegovy at an NHS specialist weight service, your BMI has to be either over 35 with additional health issues or over 40.
This would not guarantee that you will get treatment with one of these medicines, only that it could be considered.
I have type 2 diabetes, how do I get Mounjaro?
Mounjaro weight loss injections have been approved to treat type 2 diabetes only if a person’s BMI is over 35, they have other weight-related health conditions and when three or more other medicines have previously not controlled their diabetes.
This means it is not easy to access for treating type 2 diabetes either. Speak to your GP, nurse or diabetic specialist for more information.
