Mounjaro Price Hike: What It Means for UK Patients

Mounjaro pen

Eli Lilly’s UK price increase – the key details

From 1st of September 2025, Mounjaro’s manufacturer (Eli Lilly) implemented a significant UK-wide price increase across all strengths of the Mounjaro KwikPen. This means the price you’ll now pay for a Mounjaro weight loss pen has increased. For patients, this means harder choices ahead. But we’re here to break down what’s happening, why, and - most importantly - what you can do about it.

Why is Mounjaro getting more expensive?

As reported by The Guardian, Eli Lilly—the pharmaceutical giant behind Mounjaro—has announced a sharp rise in the drug’s UK pricing, citing "global market adjustments" and rising production costs. This follows similar moves in other countries, including the US, where demand for weight-loss injections has skyrocketed.

For patients, this means harder choices ahead. But we’re here to break down what’s happening, why, and—most importantly—what you can do about it.

The Guardian’s article highlights a few critical factors:

  • Corporate Profit Pressures – Eli Lilly’s pricing strategy aligns with its US model, where Mounjaro costs significantly more.
  • UK Market Adjustments – All providers are being charged more by Eli Lilly, meaning they must pass on some of this increase.

What does this mean for you?

  • All Mounjaro KwikPen prices have increased from the 1st of September 2025.
  • We’re working directly with Eli Lilly to ensure consistent stock levels.
  • Alternative treatments (like Wegovy) may see an upsurge in popularity.

Your options moving forward

1. First of all, don’t panic

Whilst the price of Mounjaro weight loss injections has increased, there is no need to stop using Mounjaro if you’re happy with it.

2. Consider switching to another GLP-1 medication

Wegovy (Semaglutide) is a good alternative to Mounjaro, but every decision should be based on your medical history in partnership with a qualified professional.

You can read more in this article to help you compare effectiveness, side effects, and pricing.

3. Explore non-GLP-1 alternatives

For some patients, alternative weight-loss medications or lifestyle programmes may be viable. Alternatives include oral options containing the active ingredient Orlistat and other oral options like Mysimba. View our range of weight loss medications here

Plan ahead

Take time to think about what might be the best option for your individual circumstances.

  • Are you comfortable paying a higher monthly price for Mounjaro?
  • Is Mounjaro helping you achieve your weight management goals?
  • Which alternative might suit you better if you decide to change?
  • You’ll need to go through a “washout” period between medications and then start the new medication on the lowest strength.

Remember, only order prescription medications from registered and qualified providers. Check for registered pharmacy logos on websites and check the GPhC register. If a much cheaper price elsewhere seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Considering A GLP-1 alternative - Wegovy

Wegovy is a GLP-1 self-injectable medication, broadly similar to the way Mounjaro works - but it’s not identical.

Why Wegovy?

Wegovy (Semaglutide) is licensed in the UK for weight loss treatment and is a common alternative to Mounjaro. Understand more about why Wegovy is a good alternative:
It’s injected at home once a week.

  • Helps you feel fuller for longer whilst curbing cravings.
  • According to studies, 1 in 3 people lose 20% of their starting body weight with Wegovy. The average weight loss is around 17% with this treatment.
  • Can improve knee pain and reduce cardiovascular risks in obese patients.
  • Has no known interaction with oral contraceptives, meaning it won't affect their effectiveness.
  • The supply chain for Wegovy originates from Denmark, providing more stable access unaffected by US tariffs or geopolitical tensions.
  • The Wegovy pen features a user-friendly design with pre-packaged needles—no alcohol swabbing required before administration.
  • Environmentally conscious users will appreciate that used pens can be recycled through Novo Nordisk's PenCycle programme.

This combination of clinical benefits, reliability, and thoughtful design makes Wegovy a practical choice for long-term weight management therapy.

Helpful FAQ’s

Why have the prices of Mounjaro risen so much?

Eli Lilly - who make Mounjaro - have increased their prices across all strength levels from 1st September 2025. This means they are charging more per pen and this is affecting every Mounjaro KwikPen retailer across the UK. Prices have risen everywhere.

I read online that I can switch to Wegovy because it’s cheaper? Can I?

Many Mounjaro weight loss patients have been switching to Wegovy because it suits their budget better, but whilst it’s a similar treatment, it’s not exactly the same. And just because you’ve been prescribed Mounjaro, it doesn’t mean you can automatically switch to Wegovy. Explore our dedicated switching page to see if it might be suitable for you.

Are oral medications any good for weight loss?

There are several oral options and they work differently in the body compared to the Mounjaro and Wegovy injections. Mounjaro and Wegovy tend to work by reducing your appetite, suppressing cravings & food noise, and making you feel fuller for longer after you’ve eaten. Oral medications containing Orlistat work differently. They act by reducing how much fat your body can absorb from the food you eat - this can be as much as 25-30%. The active ingredient binds the fat and it passes out with your bowel movements. You can read more about how each medication works here.

What are the main differences between Wegovy and Mounjaro?

Wegovy and Mounjaro are both MHRA-approved medications for weight management. However, they work differently. Wegovy is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, while Mounjaro is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Read more here about the differences.

Is there a washout period if I switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy?

Yes, but this should be done under medical supervision with a proper “washout” period. This means letting the current treatment flush out of your system before switching to a different treatment. The length of the washout period depends on which medication you’re taking, the severity of any side effects and the dose level. Explore our dedicated switching page for more information.

Do I need to start the new medication at the lowest dose even if I was on a higher dose of my previous medication?

Not everyone who switches needs to start at the lowest Wegovy dose. We offer tailored dose matching so you can switch to Wegovy on an equivalent Mounjaro dose. For example, if you're currently on 10mg of Mounjaro with minor (or no) side effects, you can switch to the 1mg dose of Wegovy. Explore our dedicated switching page for more information.

Will I experience withdrawal symptoms or weight regain during the transition?

You may experience some appetite changes and potential weight fluctuation during the transition period, as your body adjusts to being without medication temporarily. Some patients notice increased hunger or cravings returning. We can advise on strategies to minimise this, such as maintaining dietary and lifestyle habits established during treatment, and keeping the transition period as brief as safely possible.
