What we ask (and why) before we prescribe

consultation between doctors

If you’ve ever started an online consultation with us, you’ll know we ask quite a few questions. From your health history to your current medicines and even photos in some cases… it can feel like a lot.

But there’s a reason behind every single question. Far from being a barrier, it’s how we make sure you get safe, effective treatment that’s right for you. Think of it less as a form to get through and more as part of your care.

The basics: what we ask

When you start an online consultation at Oxford Online Pharmacy, we’ll usually ask about:

  • Your medical history, including any long-term conditions

  • Current medicines you’re taking

  • Allergies or past reactions

  • Lifestyle factors (like smoking, alcohol, or pregnancy status)

  • Your GP details

  • Sometimes, a photo to help confirm the diagnosis or check suitability

Why we ask these things

Our consultation form might feel detailed, but we don’t ask questions for the sake of it. Each area gives us an important piece of the bigger picture, whether that is:

To check for risks

Some health conditions can make certain medicines unsafe. For example, if you’re looking for treatment for erectile dysfunction, we need to check that it isn’t caused by unmanaged diabetes or heart disease. If we prescribed a standard treatment without investigating, it could mask the real problem and delay you getting help for something more serious.

To spot medicine interactions

Knowing what else you’re taking helps us avoid dangerous drug combinations. For instance, oral minoxidil for hair loss can be unsafe if you’re already on blood pressure tablets, because together they could push your blood pressure too low. Or take Wegovy and other GLP-1 weight loss injections. These can interact with diabetes medications, raising the risk of low blood sugar.

To make sure it’s right for you

Weight, blood pressure, or pregnancy status all matter because they change what’s safe to prescribe. For example, weight loss medications are generally only prescribed if your BMI is 30 or higher, when the health risks of obesity outweigh the risks of the medicine. Similarly, medicines like Finasteride are only suitable for men, or those assigned male at birth, and is not recommended if you’re trying to conceive, as it may temporarily affect fertility.

To confirm the diagnosis

When prescribing online, photos can prevent a misdiagnosis and ensure you get the most effective treatment.

For example, with skin conditions like acne or eczema, photos can show the spread and severity, helping us distinguish between an inflammatory skin condition and other causes that may need different treatment.

To meet legal and regulatory requirements

Some questions are also about following the law. In the UK, online pharmacies must comply with online prescribing guidelines set by the General Pharmaceutical Council and General Medical Council (1-2). These regulations are there to protect you and to ensure your treatment is prescribed responsibly and legally, so we make sure we follow them.

It’s not personal, it’s professional

We understand that some questions can feel intrusive. But nothing you share is for curiosity’s sake. Every question is there for your benefit, whether that’s avoiding dangerous drug interactions, minimising side effects, choosing the best medicine, or simply giving you peace of mind.

Even so, we know you might worry about oversharing or whether your information is safe. Rest assured, every answer you give is reviewed only by our UK-registered doctors and pharmacists, whose first priority is your well-being. We’re not here to judge or collect unnecessary personal details. We’re here to understand your health as clearly as possible so we can prescribe responsibly.

For some added peace of mind, it’s also worth knowing that Oxford Online Pharmacy is one of the few online pharmacies to have passed the most recent round of CQC inspections across all categories of care (2). That’s all this is about: giving you the best level of care possible.

Doing things right, not just quickly

We know answering so many questions can feel like a hurdle when all you want is quick treatment. And yes, some sites ask fewer questions to do things “faster.” But fast doesn’t always mean safe. We aren’t trying to be difficult. If we don’t ask all these questions, we might miss something important, and that wouldn’t be good care.

We’d rather take the responsible route and do things properly, even if it takes a little longer. Besides, our service is still quick: if your order is approved before 1pm, your medicine is dispatched the same working day. So while we won’t cut corners, we do respect your time.

Your answers = safer treatment

We’re committed to doing our part properly: following the law, asking the right questions, and reviewing your consultation carefully. But that only works if you do your part too.

That means taking a little time to answer honestly, even if the questions feel personal or awkward. If you’re not sure about something, it’s worth checking before you answer. Without truthful answers, we simply can’t prescribe safely which could risk your health.

It can sometimes feel like you’re jumping through hoops. But this isn’t about giving the “right” answers. If we don’t prescribe the medicine you wanted, it’s because it wouldn’t be safe or effective for you or because there’s a better option that’s more suited to your needs.

Honesty is what makes this process work. The more open you are, the better we can help. Together, we make the safest and most effective decision for you. That’s what responsible prescribing is all about.
