What’s the right Wegovy injection dose for me?

host of injections

Starting Wegovy can be exciting and a little confusing. With doses that change over time, it’s natural to wonder which one is “right” for you.

The truth is, there’s no single answer or magic number. Wegovy dosing is designed to be flexible, helping your body adjust comfortably while you find the level that works best for you, your response to the medicine, and your weight loss journey.

Why dose steps matter

When you start Wegovy, you begin on a low dose that’s gradually increased until you reach the “right” one (1). This gives your body space to adjust and helps reduce side effects, allowing you to find the strength to lose weight steadily without taking more medicine than you need.

This slow, stepwise approach is about safety and effectiveness. By allowing your body to adapt at each stage, you’re more likely to tolerate the medicine well and stay on track with treatment long-term, meaning more sustainable results.

So, try not to think of the “right” Wegovy dose as the final one. It’s a journey, and your ideal dose will change as you go, starting low and increasing incrementally when it’s right to do so. It’s not a race to reach a higher dose, and taking things slow often leads to better outcomes.

How Wegovy dosing works: 0.25mg to 2.4mg

All new patients are put on a low dose of Wegovy to begin with, which is increased gradually over several months until a “maintenance” level is reached. Here is the typical dosing schedule (1)

  • 0.25mg once weekly for at least 4 weeks
  • 0.5mg once weekly for at least 4 weeks
  • 1.0mg once weekly for at least 4 weeks
  • 1.7mg once weekly for at least 4 weeks
  • 2.4mg once weekly

Each strength is usually taken for at least four weeks, but if you experience nausea or other side effects, it’s completely fine (and recommended by our experts) to stay at your current dose for longer. There’s no rush, and a slow approach will benefit you in the long run.

Importantly, while 2.4mg is the highest dose available, the “right” dose for you may be lower. Everyone responds to medicines differently, and many people stay on a lower maintenance dose and see great results. The goal isn’t to reach the top dose, but to find what works best for your body.

What to do if you’re not tolerating your dose

It’s normal to experience side effects like nausea and digestive discomfort when you increase your dose of Wegovy. Your body is simply readjusting to the medication. These should settle within a few weeks and ideally be gone by the time you move up doses again.

We generally advise that if you have any nausea or discomfort, stay on your current dose until things settle and symptoms improve.

Sometimes it helps to eat smaller meals, avoid high-fat foods, or use your injection at a consistent time every week.

If side effects persist, talk to us. We may suggest pausing treatment, reducing your dose, or swapping to a different medication. Remember: reaching a high dose isn’t the goal. Feeling good and finding a treatment plan that works for you is what matters most.

What to do if you feel your dose isn’t working

Sometimes, the challenge is the opposite: your appetite starts to return and weight loss slows. This might mean it’s time to review your dose.

It’s possible that the “right” dose for you has shifted and you are ready to step up. Your clinician can review your progress and help you decide whether it’s time to increase.

However, feeling hungrier doesn't necessarily mean the medicine has stopped working. It’s normal for your body to adapt to Wegovy, and appetite can fluctuate naturally as part of that process. If your weight has stabilised, that may actually be your body reaching its healthy “set point.”

The upcoming 7.2mg dose: what we know so far

Currently, the highest dose of Wegovy is 2.4mg, but a 7.2mg option is expected to launch in the UK in 2026. The change comes as recent studies have shown that people who moved from 2.4mg to 7.2mg achieved more weight loss, with minimal differences in side effects (2).

There won’t be any new steps between 2.4 mg and 7.2 mg, just a single increase. However, it’s important to note that this higher dose won’t suit everyone. As with every dose increase, your prescriber will work with you to decide whether moving up is appropriate based on your progress and side effects.

It’s not about reaching the highest dose possible, it’s about listening to your body.

How we can support you

At Oxford Online Pharmacy, our goal is simple: to help you feel informed, supported, and confident throughout your weight loss treatment journey.

Every Wegovy order is individually reviewed by an independent prescriber. You’ll also have access to our UK-registered pharmacists, who are here to answer questions, check in on your progress, and help you manage side effects if they arise.

You can reach out to us at any point, whether you’re just starting, unsure about your next dose, or want to discuss switching to another weight loss treatment.

Final reassurance: dose progression isn’t a race

Everyone’s Wegovy journey looks a little different. Some people move through the doses quickly with few side effects, while others take things more slowly. Both are completely normal.

What matters most is how your body feels and how well you’re tolerating treatment. By taking your time, staying in touch with your prescriber, and listening to your body, you’ll give yourself the best chance of long-term success.
