Why do I need to start on the lowest dose of the Wegovy Pill?
There are a few cases in which we will recommend you start on the lowest dose of 1.5mg:
If you haven’t been on any weight loss medication before
If you have previously been on Mounjaro or another GLP-1 medication that isn’t Semaglutide
If you are on the lowest dose of Wegovy weight loss injections
We will recommend everyone who starts on a new medication to start at the lowest dose. This is because it is a new medication and your body needs time to adjust at the lowest possible dose. Once your body is able to tolerate Wegovy tablets, you can increase your dose to a higher strength (titrate) and can continue to do so until you reach maintenance. Dose increase can be discussed with your prescriber.
Why do I need to increase my Wegovy Pill dose?
Increasing your dose, also called titration, increases the amount of Semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy pills) in your body (5). The higher the dose of Semaglutide, the bigger the effect on your appetite, feelings of fullness and stomach emptying and therefore the bigger impact on your possible weight loss (7,8).
Although it is also possible to stay on the lowest dose of Wegovy tablets, increasing your dose of Wegovy pill will help you get the most benefit from your weight loss treatment. It is recommended that Wegovy pills are taken alongside regular exercise and a balanced diet.
You will start on 1.5mg of Wegovy and can increase all the way up to 25mg dose (equivalent to 2.4mg Wegovy injection) (5). Explore our Wegovy pill dosing guide to find out more information.
What is the usual dose escalation for Wegovy tablets?
The usual dose escalation for people on Wegovy weight loss tablets is (6):
1.5mg week 1-4
4mg week 5-8
9mg week 9-12
25mg week 13 onwards (maintenance dose)
It’s important to note that this is only the recommended dose escalation and some people may take longer to tolerate each new dose and stay on one dose for longer. Some people may even need to step down if they are struggling to tolerate a higher dose.
Why might I not increase my Wegovy pill dose?
Some people might not increase their Wegovy pill dose if they:
Have achieved their weight loss goal at their current dose
Are having issues with tolerating their current dose (this may even lead to dropping down a dose)
Have reached the maintenance dose of 25mg (there is no higher dose)
Dose increases are recommended by the manufacturer Novo Nordisk to achieve the best possible weight loss results (if you are tolerating the medication well) however it is all down to personal preference. You can discuss dose escalation with your prescriber or prescribing doctor.
