Wondering whether you'll be able to get the Wegovy pill on the NHS?
While nothing has been confirmed yet, the most likely answer is yes — eventually. However, NHS access is expected to take longer than private prescribing, meaning people who want to start oral Semaglutide for weight loss may be able to access it privately first.
In this guide, we'll explain what we know so far about NHS availability, who is likely to qualify, and what your options are while we wait for a final decision.

Will Wegovy tablets be available on the NHS?
The Wegovy tablet will likely be made available on the NHS, but this won’t happen immediately.
The MHRA approved the Wegovy pill as a new weight loss tablet in the UK in June 2026. However, for the NHS to routinely fund the treatment, it would also need to be assessed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (1).
Until we hear the official outcome of the NICE appraisal, we cannot say for certain that the Wegovy pill will become an NHS treatment. But because Wegovy injections are recommended for some NHS patients, it seems likely that the tablet could follow a similar path.
Who is likely to qualify for Wegovy tablets on the NHS?
At the moment, nobody knows for certain what the NHS eligibility criteria will be. NICE will decide who qualifies as part of their review.
Until that happens, we can only follow the NHS eligibility criteria of Wegovy injections as a guideline — currently only available through NHS specialist weight management services (not directly from your GP) and generally considered for adults with a (2):
BMI of 35 or more
BMI of 32.5 or higher if they are of Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African-Caribbean family background
People with a BMI of 30 to 34.9 (or 27.5 to 32.4 for the above ethnic groups) may also be prescribed Wegovy injections on the NHS if they meet other criteria.
If the Wegovy tablet is approved for NHS use, we expect similar BMI criteria. It’s also likely that access will be through weight management services, at least initially. But ultimately, the final eligibility criteria could be different. We won't know until NICE completes and publishes its review.

When could Wegovy tablets become available on the NHS?
Based on previous timelines for weight loss injections, the earliest that we expect the Wegovy pill to be available on the NHS is 2027. However, this remains an estimate rather than a confirmed launch date, and NHS rollout could take even longer.
While the MHRA has now approved the Wegovy pill in the UK, NICE will need to complete its own assessment before deciding whether the treatment should be funded by the NHS, which typically takes several more months at least.
Until the NICE review is complete, there is no confirmed NHS launch date.
Why does NHS approval take longer?
It can feel confusing when a medicine is approved but still isn't available on the NHS.
The reason is that the MHRA and NICE have different jobs. The MHRA decides whether a medicine is safe and effective enough to be licensed in the UK, while NICE decides whether it should be funded by the NHS. NICE looks at things like (3):
How well the medicine works compared to existing treatments
Whether it offers good value for money and is worth NHS funding
Which groups of patients are most likely to benefit
The broader impact on NHS services
The NICE appraisal happens after the MHRA decision, extending the timeline for NHS access. If NICE does recommend the treatment, NHS organisations then need more time to introduce prescribing pathways and decide how patients will access it.
This extra step is why NHS availability often lags behind private prescribing.
Can I get Wegovy tablets privately?
As the Wegovy pill has been licensed for use in the UK, it will be available privately before it reaches the NHS, as private prescribing can start independent of the NICE review.
You will still need to meet eligibility criteria and complete an online consultation where you answer questions on your weight, medical history, current medications, and weight loss goals. Our independent prescribers will then review your answers and, if appropriate, prescribe treatment.
You can now pre-order the 1.5mg Wegovy pill with us. If you’d like to stay up to date with the latest news on the Wegovy tablet and be notified when we can prescribe it, you can sign up for updates here.
What should I do if I want treatment now?
That depends on what's most important to you:
If your main goal is to start losing weight as soon as possible, there are already several treatments available in the UK, including Wegovy injections, Mounjaro, Mysimba, and Orlistat. These can be accessed through the NHS by some patients or privately. You can also pre-order the Wegovy pill now. We expect to have the lower doses in stock by 8th July and highest dose by 22nd July.
If you're specifically interested in the Wegovy tablet on the NHS, you may prefer to wait and see whether it receives NHS approval. Alternatively, private prescription could be a good alternative route, rather than waiting for NHS availability.
Ultimately, there isn't a right or wrong answer. Some people are happy to start treatment now, while others would rather wait for a more effective no-needle option.
