What is the Wegovy pill?

weight loss tablet

If you’ve been following weight loss news, you might have seen headlines about a Wegovy pill for obesity. Up until recently, GLP-1 treatments like Wegovy have been available only as injections. But an oral version of semaglutide (Wegovy Pill) is now is approved for use in the UK, and is expected to be available for purchase around the 8th July.

Here’s what we know about the medicine so far and what it could mean for people considering weight loss treatment.

What is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily tablet for weight loss containing the active ingredient Semaglutide, the same medication used in the once-weekly Wegovy weight loss injection. These treatments are prescribed for weight loss in adults who meet BMI criteria, usually a BMI of 30 or above (27 and above with a weight-related condition).

Importantly, this is not a “new” drug — it’s the same active ingredient delivered in a different way.

Semaglutide has been used in the UK since 2018 (as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes), and an oral version has already been available as Rybelsus. Globally, more than 22 million people have been treated with semaglutide, giving it a well-established safety and effectiveness profile.

How is the Wegovy pill taken?

The Wegovy pill should be taken once daily with water, usually in the morning on an empty stomach. It should be taken at least 30 minutes before your first meal, drink, or other medication to help your body absorb it properly (2).

Like the injection, the tablet is introduced gradually to help reduce side effects. In the UK, the expected dosing schedule uses the following strengths:

  • 1.5mg

  • 4mg

  • 9mg

  • 25mg

Most people will begin on a low dose and increase step-by-step over several weeks until they reach the 25mg maintenance dose that is effective and well tolerated.

Your prescriber will guide you from the 1.5mg starting dose through dose increases and decide whether to continue, adjust, or stop treatment based on how well it’s working for you.

How does the Wegovy pill work?

Semaglutide belongs to a group of medicines known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, meaning it works by mimicking a hormone your body produces naturally called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) (3). This hormone is released after you eat to help:

  • Reduce your appetite

  • Increase feelings of fullness

  • Slow down digestion

  • Regulate your blood sugar levels

By activating GLP-1 receptors, semaglutide helps many people feel satisfied with smaller portions and snack less frequently. Over time, this can lead to gradual, clinically meaningful weight loss.

This is the same appetite-regulating pathway that the Wegovy injection works on. The key difference between the tablet and the injection is simply how the medicine enters your body and how often you take it, not what it does once it’s there.

How effective is the Wegovy pill?

In a large 64-week clinical trial, people taking the Wegovy pill lost an average of around 14–17% of their starting body weight (4). Studies have proven that the Wegovy pill is most effective for weight loss when used alongside a calorie-reduced diet and physical activity.

Looking beyond the average, the results show how many people achieved meaningful weight loss:

  • Around 90% lost at least 5% of their starting weight

  • Around 70% lost at least 10%

  • Around 50% lost at least 15%

  • Around 25% lost at least 20%

As with any GLP-1 treatment, results vary from person to person, and real-world results might not match tightly controlled trial averages. Nevertheless, losing as little as 3% of body weight and keeping the weight off significantly reduces the risks of obesity-related complications (5).

How do Wegovy pill results compare to Wegovy injections?

The 25mg tablet has the same bioavailability (how much of a medicine reaches your bloodstream) as the 2.4mg weekly injection. So, at these doses, the Wegovy pill and Wegovy injection achieve very similar levels of weight loss overall – an average loss of 15% of starting body weight, the same range as the 2.4mg weekly injection maintenance dose (6).

It’s also important to remember that these figures are averages. In real life, some people lose more weight, while others lose less. Tolerability, side effects, and personal preference all play an important role in deciding which option and dose is right for you.

Equally, both the Wegovy tablet and injection are intended to be used alongside a balanced diet and regular exercise.

What’s the difference between the Wegovy pill and Wegovy injections?

When comparing Wegovy pill vs Wegovy injection it's key to note that both contain semaglutide and help people achieve similar weight loss overall, but differ in how they fit into your routine. In practice, the “better” option often comes down to personal preference, lifestyle, and how well you tolerate the treatment.

Here are some of the key differences to consider:

  • How often you take it. The tablet is taken once daily, while the injection is taken once weekly. Some people prefer a daily routine, while others find a weekly dose easier.

  • How it’s taken. The tablet must be taken in the morning on an empty stomach. The injection can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.

  • Storage and delivery. Injectable Wegovy is typically stored in the fridge before use. The tablet can be kept at room temperature, which can make it more convenient for some people.

  • Dosing flexibility. The injection offers a wider range of dosing options, including higher-dose maintenance options such as the 7.2mg Wegovy pen for people who need additional support.

  • Preference and comfort. For people who are uncomfortable with injections, the tablet may feel like a more accessible option.

  • Ease with travel. Wegovy tablets do not need to be kept in the fridge like the Wegovy injection so can be easily transported. This is especially useful when going on holiday.

Can you the Wegovy pill with Wegovy injections?

No, you can’t use the Wegovy pill and injections together, and doing so won’t help you lose more weight more quickly.

Both contain semaglutide, so using them together would increase the dose beyond what is considered safe and appropriate. If prescribed, the weight loss tablet would be used instead of injectable Wegovy, not alongside it (3).

The same applies to other weight loss injectables, such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Saxenda (liraglutide). Although these medicines contain different drugs, they all mimic the GLP-1 hormone and cannot be safely taken together (3).

Can you switch between Wegovy injections and Wegovy tablets?

Yes. If you’re currently wondering how to switch from Wegovy injections to Wegovy pill and think you’d prefer a daily tablet, switching may be possible, but it should be guided by a clinician to make sure it’s managed safely.

How the switch works generally depends on where you are in your current treatment:

  • If you’re already on the 2.4mg maintenance dose, you may be able to switch directly to the 25mg daily tablet.

  • If you’re still early in treatment or on a lower dose, you’ll usually need to start on a lower tablet dose and increase gradually, rather than switching straight to the highest strength.

In some cases, people who don’t get the results they need from the tablet may move back to injections, including higher-dose options such as 7.2mg.

You can also switch to the Wegovy tablet from Mounjaro. However, because you’re changing to a new medicine, your prescriber may recommend starting from the beginning of the tablet dosing schedule even if you’ve worked your way up to a maintenance dose on injections.

Who is the Wegovy pill for?

The Wegovy tablet may appeal to people new to GLP-1 treatments who are unsure about injections, or those already using injectable treatments but feel a daily tablet will be more convenient. It could be especially suitable for people who:

  • Aren’t comfortable with injections

  • Prefer taking a daily pill over a weekly injection

  • May wish to switch from injections for maintenance

  • Want to explore alternative GLP-1 treatments

Because it avoids injections, the tablet may also increase uptake among men, who have historically been less likely to start injectable weight loss treatments. However, it won’t be for everyone. Some people may find it difficult to remember to take a daily tablet and prefer the injectable version. Others may not be suitable for semaglutide at all based on other health conditions and medications.

This is why, like the injection, the Wegovy pill requires clinical assessment and prescribing.

When will the Wegovy pill be available in the UK?

As of 11th June 2026, the Wegovy pill is approved for use in the UK by the MHRA. It will be available first through private prescription and is expected to be available to purchase around the 8th July 2026.

Access via the NHS will likely take longer, as NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) needs to review how the medicine should be used and who is eligible in NHS settings. This is expected to be towards the end of 2026.

You can pre-order the Wegovy pill today for early July release.

What does this mean for you right now?

The arrival of the Wegovy pill shows how quickly weight loss treatments are evolving. For some people, having an oral option may make treatment feel more accessible and easier to manage day to day. But it doesn’t change the fundamentals:

  • GLP-1 treatments work best alongside lifestyle changes

  • Dose progression needs to be gradual

  • Side effects (such as nausea or digestive discomfort) are still possible

  • Clinical supervision remains essential

If you’re considering weight loss treatment now, injectable Wegovy and other GLP-1 medicines remain the licensed choices in the UK. If you’re unsure which may suit you, our UK-registered prescribers and pharmacists are here to help you explore safe, evidence-based options.
