If you’ve been following updates on weight loss treatments, you might have heard that a new 7.2mg dose of Wegovy (semaglutide) is now available in the UK (1). But we are still a few months off from seeing a dedicated pen that delivers the new Wegovy highest dose in a single shot.
This article explains how people prescribed the 7.2mg dose are currently taking it, why a new Wegovy single-dose pen is on the way, when the dedicated pen will become available in the UK, and what to expect when this happens.
First, a little reassurance: Not everyone needs the new 7.2mg dose. It’s about finding the dose that works for your body, supports steady progress, and feels manageable long term.
What’s happening at the moment?
As of January 2026, 7.2mg of Wegovy is licensed and being prescribed in the UK for weight loss. However, there isn’t currently a pen that delivers this dose in a single shot.
So, how are people currently taking it?
You may have already seen this discussed on Reddit or other forums, but at the moment, patients are using three 2.4mg injections per week to reach the full 7.2mg dose (2). This approach is approved, safe, and legally prescribed under medical supervision. Yet, it can feel slightly more complicated, as instead of one weekly injection, you need to administer three.
Importantly, this is only a temporary arrangement. Novo Nordisk has applied for approval to develop a dedicated Wegovy 7.2mg single-dose pen (2). If approved, this pen will replace the current setup once it completes manufacturing and distribution.
What will change with the new pen?
In the UK, current Wegovy doses (0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, and 2.4mg) are administered using FlexTouch pens that are pre-filled with four weekly doses (3). You use the same pen across the month, using a new needle before each use and disposing of the pen at the end of the month.
The new 7.2mg Wegovy pen not only contains a higher dose, but it will also be in a different format. You will still receive a month’s supply at a time, but it will be:
Supplied as a box of four single-use pens
Each pen contains one full 7.2mg dose of Wegovy
One pen = one week (rather than one month)
Why the change? It’s down to design: the 7.2mg dose requires a larger volume of medication, and the existing multi-dose pen simply isn’t big enough to hold four separate 7.2mg doses. Developing a single-use pen format allows the higher dose to be delivered safely and accurately.
In practical terms, this new format should make things more straightforward. A single shot is more convenient than three separate injections and, unlike the current FlexTouch pens, a single-dose pen format won’t require you to change the needle. You simply remove the cap, inject the medicine, and throw the pen away.
What about recycling and waste?
Because the new 7.2mg Wegovy format uses single-dose pens, it does unfortunately mean more plastic waste than the multi-dose versions.
The good news is that Novo Nordisk runs a recycling initiative called PenCycle. Patients in the UK can request a freepost cardboard box to return used injectable pens for recycling (4). This helps reduce environmental impact and ensures your sharps are disposed of safely.
Is the 7.2mg pen right for everyone?
No, the 7.2mg dose of Wegovy isn’t right for everyone, and this is important. The new Wegovy highest dose provides an extra option that might help some people lose more weight, but it isn’t a “goal” in itself (5). Many of our patients maintain weight loss successfully at 1.7mg or 2.4mg.
Higher doses are usually considered when all of the following apply:
You’ve been taking the 2.4mg dose for at least 4 weeks
Your weight loss has plateaued before reaching your target weight
Your current dose is well tolerated without any major side effects
There are still clinical reasons to continue losing weight
If these apply, you likely qualify for 7.2mg of Wegovy. The higher strength might offer the extra support you need to reach your goals.
If recommended by your prescriber, you don’t need to wait until the single-dose pen is released to step up your dose. Injecting three 2.4mg doses weekly while waiting for the 7.2mg pens to be distributed means you can keep moving forward on your weight loss journey.
When will the Wegovy 7.2mg pen be available?
Current expectations suggest the Wegovy single-dose pen will be available in the UK late summer 2026 (around August–September), though exact launch timing depends on manufacturing, supply chains, and distribution approvals.
It isn’t available yet, but we’ll update our patients as soon as it is.
In the meantime, talk to your prescriber to see if this new 7.2mg strength might be appropriate. You can also explore other weight loss injections available in the UK, read more information on our Weight Loss Hub, or speak to our team if you have further questions about Wegovy.
