Can you switch from Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets?
Yes, most people can switch from the Wegovy injection to the Wegovy tablet. In fact, it’s one of the easiest injection-to-tablet switches you can do, as it doesn’t involve changing to a different medication, and you don’t need to stop Semaglutide treatment.
You are still taking the same active ingredient. The only thing that changes is how the medicine gets into your body:
With injections, Semaglutide is absorbed through the tissue under the skin
With the tablet, Semaglutide passes through the digestive system
This means that most people can simply take their first Wegovy tablet on the day their next injection would have been due, and continue taking it daily. However, the exact tablet strength you’ll switch to will depend on your current dose and how well you’re tolerating treatment.
What dose of the Wegovy tablet will you switch to?
Because your body is already used to Semaglutide, you won’t have to restart on the lowest dose.
But as the body absorbs tablets and injections differently, there’s no direct milligram-to-milligram equivalence. Your prescriber will choose the closest comparable strength based on your current dose:
If you are already stable on the 2.4mg Wegovy injection, switching directly to the 25mg tablet may be possible, as these provide comparable Semaglutide exposure.
If you are on a lower maintenance dose, the switch will usually be to a lower strength. For example, 1.7mg injectable Wegovy may align more closely with the 9mg tablet.
If you have only recently started injections and are still moving through the dosing schedule, you may need to switch to a lower-strength tablet, then increase gradually.
Your current tolerability matters too. If you are struggling with side effects at your current injectable dose, your prescriber may recommend switching to a lower tablet strength rather than the closest equivalent, depending on what feels most manageable for you.
Will switching cause more side effects or affect your weight loss?
Because you’re continuing Semaglutide rather than stopping, switching shouldn’t cause weight regain or major changes to side effects.
As standard Wegovy injections and tablets are broadly similar in effectiveness (2-3), people are generally expected to continue on a similar weight loss path after switching, provided the tablet is taken correctly, and you move to an effective equivalent dose.
However, despite sharing common side effects (2-3), changing how the medicine is delivered may affect how your body responds. Some people notice differences in tolerability, particularly if doses need adjusting.
How will your weight loss treatment routine change?
For many people, this is the biggest adjustment. With Wegovy injections, once you have chosen an injection day, there is relatively little day-to-day planning involved.
The tablet works very differently. Once you’ve switched over, you need to consistently take the tablet at the same time each day. But this is not the kind of tablet you take casually alongside breakfast. The Wegovy tablet must be taken (4):
First thing in the morning
On an empty stomach
With a small amount of water (no more than 120ml)
At least 30 minutes before food, drink, or other medicines
Its strict timing instructions require more routine and planning than many people expect. For some, that feels simpler than self-injecting. For others, moving from a flexible weekly routine to a stricter daily one is a bigger commitment.
When might switching not be the right move?
If you are doing well on Wegovy injections with minimal side effects and don’t mind taking them, changing format may not offer much benefit.
A tablet may sound simpler, but in practice, the strict instructions on taking oral Semaglutide can be hard to follow consistently for some people. Because of this, switching may appeal less if you have unpredictable mornings, struggle to remember daily medication, or prefer a more flexible option.
Switching may also be less suitable if your weight loss has already slowed at 2.4mg and you may need additional support to reach your target weight. Injectable Wegovy includes a higher 7.2mg option, but there is no equivalent higher-dose tablet.
