Is it safe to order prescription medicines online?

guy looking at if its safe to order prescription medicine online.

Buying medication online is becoming increasingly popular, with more people seeking quick, discreet access to healthcare. In fact, nearly half (44%) of UK adults have bought medicine or medical products online. (1)

It saves the hassle of a GP appointment, treatments are delivered to your door, and the whole process is private and confidential. But is it safe?

This is a valid (and common) concern to have. While there are many regulated UK online pharmacies that prioritise patient safety, there are also unregulated websites that don’t follow the rules. News stories about fake medications or scam sellers make it difficult to know who to trust, if anyone at all.

There’s good news though. It is possible to safely order prescription-only medication (POMs) online, as long as you know what to look for. In this article, we’ll walk you through the risks to avoid, the signs of a legitimate provider, and how to safely order treatment online.

The risks (and how to spot them)

It’s important to take care when buying medicines online, as not everyone has your health (or the law) in mind. Unregulated sellers often ignore essential prescribing protocols, sell counterfeit drugs, and operate without a license overseas. Buying medication from these websites carries various risks:

  • No clinical oversight. Prescription medications require a consultation with a doctor to ensure treatment is safe. Fake online pharmacies often bypass this, allowing you to purchase POMs without a prescription or the approval of a healthcare professional.
  • No guidance or follow-up care. Patients taking prescription medicine should receive proper advice around dosages and side effects, and be monitored during treatment. However, unregulated sellers don’t typically offer any medical advice, ongoing care, or the option to speak to a real pharmacist.
  • Fake or unsafe medications. They might contain the wrong ingredients, incorrect amounts of the active ingredient, or no active ingredient at all. They might also be expired, diluted, contaminated with harmful substances, or unlicensed in the UK. In 2024, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) seized more than 17 million doses of illegally-traded drugs, most of which were not licensed for sale. (2)
  • Outside UK jurisdiction. These unregulated sites are often based outside the UK, so won’t have a registered UK address or provide any contact details. This makes it difficult to hold them accountable if anything goes wrong, either with the medication, delivery, or payment.
  • Lack of security. The site may not have a clear privacy policy and lack proper security measures, so your personal and financial data might not be protected. This could lead to credit card fraud or identity theft.

Tell-tale signs of a fake online pharmacy

While some unregulated websites are poorly designed with obvious warning signs, others may look professional and convincing. However, they operate in similar ways with similar characteristics. Here’s how to quickly tell if you’ve landed on an unsafe site:

  • No General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) logo, registration number, or other regulatory logos.
  • Allows you to order prescription medications without a consultation.
  • No licensed pharmacist available to speak to.
  • Promoting prescription-only drugs and prices on the home page, which is illegal in the UK.
  • Unusual web address that starts with “http.” instead of “https.”.
  • Spelling and grammar errors, clunky navigation, and poor web design.
  • No refund, privacy, or data policies.
  • No physical address provided.
  • The prices are suspiciously low and not in line with market value.
  • Exaggerated efficacy claims like “100% effective”.

If a website selling medication has any of these red flags, or something just feels ‘off’, it’s best to avoid it as your health isn’t worth risking.

The signs of a legitimate online pharmacy

If you’re considering ordering prescription medication online, it’s crucial you choose a licensed UK pharmacy. Legitimate providers, like Oxford Online Pharmacy, always meet strict regulatory standards, with patient safety being the top priority.

Here’s how you know you’re dealing with a safe, regulated provider:

  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). The GPhC is the regulator for all pharmacies in Great Britain. They provide guidance and conduct inspections to ensure pharmacies meet standards for safe, effective care.
  • UK-based website with verifiable location. Reliable providers are transparent about where they’re based, and will have a physical street address and contact number.
  • Consultation required for POMs. Reputable pharmacies require you to complete an online consultation before supplying prescription medicine. A licensed doctor will then review your answers to ensure treatment is safe to prescribe.
  • Doctors registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). All prescribing doctors must be on the GMC register.
  • Licensed medicines. Reputable online pharmacies will only supply treatments approved by the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), ensuring they’re stored, dispensed, and transported correctly.

These conditions are not optional; they’re legal requirements designed to protect your health. While buying medicine online is a quick and convenient solution, a trusted provider won’t cut corners or compromise your health. They still take time to understand your medical history, offer clinical guidance, and only issue a prescription if it’s safe to do so.

All pharmacies in Great Britain, including those offering internet services, must be registered with the GPhC (General Pharmaceutical Council) and meet their registered pharmacy requirements.

How Oxford Online Pharmacy ensures safe prescribing

With over 100 years of pharmacy experience, we do more than simply meet regulatory requirements. We’ve built a culture of care that puts patient safety and professional standards above everything else, while still providing a smooth online experience.

Our qualified pharmacy team is fully regulated by the GPhC, and is led by Stuart Gale, our founder and CEO, and Superintendent Pharmacist Robert Bradshaw. All consultations are reviewed by independent GMC-registered doctors to ensure treatments are appropriate to prescribe. If it’s not approved for any reason, we’ll suggest alternatives or offer guidance around other forms of support. We’re also not afraid to pick up the phone, so if you have any questions, you can give us a ring and speak to a real, qualified professional.

Oxford Online Pharmacy is also one of very few online pharmacies to have passed the most recent round of Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspections for digital healthcare providers across all categories of care. The latest CQC report confirms that we are “providing safe, effective and well-led services.” (3)

By combining the values of traditional care with regulatory compliance and online convenience, we ensure patient safety is protected at every step.

What to check before you order

It’s so easy to be impulsive when shopping online, but caution and consideration are key when it comes to medication. Here are some practical checks to make before placing an order:

  1. Look for the GPhC, MHRA, and CQC logos. They should be clickable and linked to the pharmacy’s entry on the official regulator’s website.
  2. Check the address and contact number. Be wary of websites that don’t provide a location or contact details.
  3. Verify registration numbers. These should be displayed on the website. Use the GPhC register for pharmacies and pharmacists, and the GMC register for doctors.
  4. Check you can speak to a pharmacist. You should be able to speak to a real pharmacist on the phone.
  5. Check there’s a consultation for POMs. Genuine providers will ask questions about you and your medical history before you’re able to order.
  6. Check how prescriptions are issued. They should only be written following clinical review by a licensed prescriber.

It only takes a few minutes, and can be the difference between safe treatment and a health risk.
