The key points
- Same ingredient, different purpose: Wegovy and Ozempic both contain Semaglutide, but Wegovy is licensed for weight loss and Ozempic for type 2 diabetes.
- Dosage differences matter: Wegovy can be taken at higher doses than Ozempic, which may lead to more weight loss for eligible patients.
- Different pens, same ease: Both medicines use discreet weekly injection pens with minimal handling required.
- Side effects are similar: Nausea, bloating, and fatigue are common, especially as doses increase.
- Wegovy is the licensed option for weight: If weight management is your goal, Wegovy is the UK-approved treatment.
- Always consult a professional: Don’t switch or start Semaglutide without medical advice, both require a prescription and proper oversight.
If you’ve been researching weight loss treatments or Semaglutide injections in the UK, chances are you’ve come across two familiar names: Wegovy and Ozempic. Both contain the same active ingredient, Semaglutide. But that doesn’t mean they’re interchangeable.
This guide breaks down the key differences (and similarities) so you can confidently decide which option might suit your needs, whether that’s weight loss or blood sugar control.
Same ingredient, different purposes
At first glance, Wegovy and Ozempic seem nearly identical. They’re made by the same manufacturer, Novo Nordisk. They’re both injected once a week. And they both contain Semaglutide, a medication that mimics a natural gut hormone (GLP-1) to help regulate appetite, insulin, and blood sugar.
The difference lies in their intended use and licensing in the UK:
- Wegovy is licensed for weight management (1)
- Ozempic is licensed for treating type 2 diabetes (1)
So, even though Semaglutide can help with both weight loss and blood sugar control, which one suits you will depend on why you’re considering Semaglutide in the first place.
If you’re managing type 2 diabetes, Ozempic might be the one prescribed for you via your NHS doctor or diabetes clinic. If weight loss is your primary goal (and you meet the eligibility criteria), Wegovy is the licensed route in the UK.
Some private clinics have previously prescribed Ozempic “off-label” for weight loss. However, this is not its licensed use in the UK and is now less common following the launch of Wegovy.
Dosage differences
Both Ozempic and Wegovy follow a gradual dose increase to help your body adjust and reduce side effects. The first three months of treatment are the same on both drugs (2):
- Weeks 1 to 4: 0.25mg
- Weeks 5 to 8: 0.5mg
- Weeks 9 to 12: 1mg
After that, things start to look a little different (2):
- Wegovy doses continue to increase to 1.7mg (weeks 13–16) and then 2.4mg from week 17 onwards, which is the maximum licensed dose for weight management.
- Ozempic usually stays at 1mg, although some people with diabetes may be prescribed the higher 2mg dose from week 13. This is not common and typically reserved for specific cases.
It’s important to know that reaching the highest dose isn’t always necessary. Many patients see benefits at lower doses. For diabetes, 1mg is often effective at controlling blood sugar. For weight loss, studies show that 1.7mg of Wegovy can already lead to significant results.
What about the pens?
If you’re worried about syringes, good news: you don’t need to see or handle a syringe directly with either Wegovy or Ozempic. Both come in easy-to-use pens designed with patient comfort in mind.
Wegovy pens:
- Multi-use, pre-filled pens (3)
- You inject four fixed doses, one each week, per pen, then safely dispose of it
- Comes with four small needles for a smooth experience
Ozempic pens:
- Dial-a-dose pens that are reusable for up to four doses (4)
- You turn a dial to select the correct dose before injecting
- Requires changing the needle after each use
- Uses NovoFine Plus 32G 4mm needles – the thinnest available (as thin as two hairs)
Side effects and safety signals
Because both Wegovy and Ozempic contain Semaglutide, their side effects are identical. Common side effects include (5):
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Bloating or indigestion
- Headache
- Fatigue
These are typically dose-dependent and occur during the first few weeks or when increasing doses. These often improve as your body adjusts. Starting on a low dose and increasing gradually helps to ease the transition.
While very rare, both medications can also cause serious side effects, including low blood sugar, inflammation of the pancreas, kidney problems, gallbladder problems, and severe allergic reactions. This is why a proper medical consultation is essential before starting. A doctor will help ensure it’s safe for your individual health profile.
Who might suit which?
Since the ingredient is the same in both Wegovy and Ozempic, your health goals and medical history determine which treatment is best suited for you.
You might suit Ozempic if:
- You’re living with type 2 diabetes
- You need help controlling your blood sugar levels
- You’re under the care of an NHS diabetes clinic
- Your GP or diabetes specialist recommends it to control blood glucose
You might suit Wegovy if:
- Your primary goal is losing weight
- You’ve already tried diet and lifestyle changes
- Your BMI is 30 or above (or 27+ with a weight-related health condition)
- You’re not diabetic but need support with your weight
Remember: Ozempic should not be prescribed for weight loss in the UK – so if weight management is your main goal, Wegovy is the approved option.

Switching or starting – what to expect
Before Wegovy was launched in the UK, some clinics had been selling Ozempic off-label for weight loss. This is why most people still associate the Ozempic product with weight loss.
If you’ve previously used Ozempic or are thinking about switching, you’ll need medical guidance. You should never take both medications together, as they contain the same drug and could lead to overdose or severe side effects.
If you're switching from Ozempic to Wegovy:
- Your starting dose may be adjusted based on your previous Semaglutide use.
- Your prescriber will guide you through the transition to avoid overlap or side effects.
- Side effects may recur temporarily with a higher Wegovy dose, but this is normal and usually short-lived.
New to Semaglutide altogether? You’ll start with a low dose of 0.25mg of Semaglutide, increasing gradually over several months to reach a maintenance dose. This gives your body time to adjust and helps reduce nausea and other side effects.
How to get Semaglutide safely in the UK
Wegovy and Ozempic are prescription-only medicines. That means they should never be purchased from unregulated websites or social media ads, which often sell counterfeit or unsafe products (6).
You can still buy Semaglutide injections safely online from licensed internet pharmacies. At Oxford Online Pharmacy, we offer Wegovy weight loss injections via private prescription after a simple, confidential consultation with one of our GMC-registered doctors. If you're eligible, we’ll deliver discreetly to your door with ongoing support.
Alternatively, you may be able to get Semaglutide injections through the NHS:
- Wegovy is available on the NHS for weight management, but only through specialist weight management services (7). You can’t get it directly from your GP.
- Ozempic is available via your GP or diabetes clinic, but only for treating diabetes. With a valid prescription from your doctor, you can then buy your medication from a licensed pharmacy.
Still not sure which one’s right for you?
Choosing between Wegovy and Ozempic isn’t just about the drug itself. It’s about what you need, what suits your lifestyle, and what’s safe and appropriate for your goals.
