While renowned for its effectiveness in treating acne by eliminating blackheads and pimples, the advantages of Differin extend well beyond just these blemish-fighting properties.
Dermatologists have found that Differin's key ingredient, adapalene, a type of retinoid, effectively combats common signs of ageing such as fine lines, dark spots, and dull skin.

What is a retinoid?
Retinoids, a group of chemicals derived from vitamin A, have been widely recognised for their remarkable effectiveness in treating acne and combating signs of ageing.
These compounds exist in various forms, with some serving as the key ingredient in skincare products readily available in pharmacies. These include retinyl palmitate, retinol, and retinaldehyde (retinal).
Among them, retinol is the natural form of vitamin A commonly found in cosmetics, which requires two oxidisation steps to transform into its active form, known as retinoic acid. On the other hand, retinal only requires one step. When it comes to prescription retinoids like adapalene, they contain retinoic acid, the active molecule that effectively works on the skin.
What is adapalene?
Adapalene, classified as a third-generation topical retinoid, is mainly used to address mild to moderate acne and wrinkles.
It effectively prevents breakouts, blackheads, whiteheads, blemishes, and clogged pores, while simultaneously improving skin tone and texture by clearing acne.
Moreover, Adapalene aids in diminishing the likelihood of scarring and hyperpigmentation associated with acne treatment.
How does Differin gel work?
Adapalene helps to enhance and restore the skin's epidermal (hyperpigmentation and surface roughness) and dermal (fine wrinkles) layers. It also decreases the microorganisms involved with acne formation, Propionibacterium Acnes.
The cosmetically attractive composition of Differin Gel (as opposed to other retinoid formulations such as tretinoin and Differin cream) can result in significantly increased compliance, less risk of irritation (dryness, peeling), and overall ease of usage.
How long until you see results?
The visible improvement in wrinkles due to Differin can take up to 12 months, with the average timeframe being 6-12 months, and in some cases, improvements may be noticed as early as 3 months. However, enhancements in skin vitality are often observable much sooner than the wrinkle-reducing effects.
What are the ingredients in Differin gel?
Adapalene .3%, carbomer 940, edetate disodium, methylparaben, poloxamer 182, propylene glycol, purified water and sodium hydroxide. May contain hydrochloric acid to adjust ph.
Differin is free from oil, alcohol and fragrances.

How to use Differin (Adapalene) Gel for Anti-ageing 45g
Use Differin gel once daily, making it an essential step in your morning or evening skincare routine.
It is recommended to apply the product at the same time each day for consistency. For optimal outcomes, start by cleansing the skin with a mild, non-irritating, and non-drying cleanser.
Then, apply a thin layer of Differin gel to clean, dry skin, covering the entire face, and follow up with a moisturiser.
Follow your regular routine, which may include using moisturiser, SPF during the day, or evening treatments like oils.
Remember not to exceed one application per day, as using more than directed will not lead to quicker or better results.
Side effects of Differin (Adapalene) Gel for Anti-ageing 45g
Differin gel side effects
What are the most common side effects?
During the initial four weeks of use, you may experience redness, increased dryness, sensitivity, scaling, or a mild burning or stinging sensation. These reactions are normal and should diminish after about a month. Some individuals may not experience any reaction at all, while others might have a moderate reaction. However, most find it comfortable enough to continue using the product without discontinuing it.
If these side effects occur you can build up tolerance by applying the product for 30 minutes at night for 1 week, then 45 minutes at night for 1 week, then 60 minutes and over night.
Once you pass the initial period, continue using the product regularly. Keep in mind that this is a permanent solution, not just a temporary fix.
