Acid reflux is the passage of stomach acid up into the oesophagus (food pipe); when this occurs frequently, it is known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Heartburn is one of the most common symptoms of acid reflux, and it occurs when the acid irritates the sensitive surface of the oesophagus. Heartburn symptoms are often described as a searing discomfort in the stomach that goes up to the chest. Discomfort in the back of the throat may cause an unpleasant or acidic taste in the mouth.
