Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a medication that helps alleviate the symptoms of menopause. However, HRT can be expensive, especially for individuals who require frequent or long-term treatment. Fortunately, the NHS has introduced a new Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) for HRT that can help patients save money on their medication.
Starting from 1 April 2023, patients living in England will have access to a new Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) to help reduce the cost of hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
How much does the PPC cost?
From 1 April 2023, the NHS prescription charge will rise to £9.65. (1)
An NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) will cost you the following:
- 3 monthly PPC - £31.25
- 12 months PPC - £111.60 (patients can spread the cost and pay in 10 monthly instalments)
- 12 Months Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) PPC - £19.30
A PPC could help people who pay for their NHS medications to save money. The 3 and 12-month PPC covers limitless NHS prescriptions for the one-time set amount rather than charging £9.65 for each prescription. This indicates that individuals will save money by purchasing a PPC if they need 4 or more goods in 3 months or 12 or more things in a year. Depending on how many medicines they require each month, they may be able to save a certain amount.
This HRT prepayment certificate will be valid for one year and can cover an unlimited number of eligible HRT medications for ONLY the cost of two single prescription charges. Please note that all HRT medications must be issued on a separate prescription form so you can sign the correct exemption on the back.
Patients who pay more than two HRT prescription charges within 12 months could save money.
The HRT PPC is an excellent option for individuals who require frequent or long-term HRT medication. It can help reduce the cost of medication and make it easier for patients to access the treatment they need. Patients should note that they must have a valid HRT PPC to claim exemption from HRT prescription charges.
Who is eligible for a PPC?
Before buying an HRT PPC, patients should check their eligibility for free NHS prescriptions, covered HRT medication, and whether a 3 or 12-month PPC is more suitable. The green NHS prescription forms (FP10) and the blue NHS prescription refund forms (FP57) will be updated to reflect these changes. (2)
Before buying an HRT PPC, a patient should check if:
- they’re eligible for free NHS prescriptions using the eligibility checker.
- Their medicine is covered by the HRT PPC.
- A 3- or 12-month PPC is more suitable. It covers all NHS prescriptions, not just HRT items.
