How to inject Alprostadil?

You can find a diagram of how to use the pens and how they are injected into the penis on the patient information leaflets.

You should always make sure the injection site is clean by using an alcohol swab. 

You must hold the needle straight to the side of the penis where you will be injecting the medicine. If you inject this medicine and the needle isn’t straight you could cause extreme penile pain.

You shouldn’t inject more than once in 24 hours and do not use this medicine more than 3 times a week.

Possible side effects

Side effects are possible with any medicine, although not everyone will experience them.

A more common side effect of using Alprostadil injections is experiencing mild to moderate discomfort during the injection process. In addition, erections induced by the medication may also be accompanied by pain. Should you experience intense pain, it's advisable to contact your doctor straight away. 2

If you experience any signs such as redness, lumps, swelling, tenderness, or curvature of the erect penis, it's important to consult your doctor promptly.

Occasional bleeding at the injection site might occur. To minimise bruising, apply firm pressure at the injection site for approximately 5 minutes, continuing until bleeding stops.

You must Inform your doctor if you have any underlying conditions or if you're taking medications that may affect blood clotting.
