- Invert the vial and gently pull back the plunger to draw the correct dose of medication.
- Tap the syringe to remove the air bubbles, then remove the needle and replace the cap.
- To give the injection, select a suitable spot on the side of the penis, avoiding the centre and any visible veins.
- Clean the area with an alcohol pad, then insert the needle straight in at a 90-degree angle and slowly inject the medication.
- Once done, withdraw the needle and apply pressure to the injection site for at least one minute to stop any bleeding.
- Safely dispose of the used syringe in a proper container.
Alprostadil Injection side effects
Like other medicines, side effects can happen, especially if you do not use the medication as directed by your doctor.
Side effects of Alprostadil may include:
- Injection site rash and swelling
- Headaches and feeling dizzy
- Hypertension
- Infections (this is why you need to ensure the area, hand and needle are all sterile)
- Blood at the injection site
- Prolonged erections
