Estradot (Estradiol) Patch is used for hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Estradot is a stick-on patch containing the active ingredient estradiol. The patches are used short-term for the treatment of menopause symptoms. It is advised by healthcare professionals that any form of HRT is not used as long-term maintenance for your health generally or to prevent dementia or heart disease.

Estradot should not be used as a form of birth control and will not restore fertility.

How Estradot Patches work

Estradiol is the same natural hormone as oestrogen, which is produced by your ovaries before menopause. Menopause happens naturally to women between the ages of 45 and 55, however, it could happen sooner if the ovaries are surgically removed, for example, as a result of a hysterectomy.

Your body will produce much less oestrogen than it did before menopause and this could result in experiencing some unpleasant symptoms, such as hot flushes, night sweats, depression and irritability. Many women also experience issues with discomfort during or after sex caused by vaginal dryness. This can be relieved with hormone replacement therapy.

Estradot works by releasing oestradiol into the body in the same controlled manner as your ovaries were before. The benefit of the patch is that the medicine is applied directly to the skin, which quickly absorbs through to the bloodstream. As it is applied locally, a much lower dose of oestrogen is needed to be as effective as oral tablets. Another benefit of the Estradot patches in comparison to oral tablets is that the medication will not be passed through your stomach or liver which reduces the chances of getting any severe side effects.

Message From Our Pharmacist

All hormone replacement therapy should be initiated after a discussion with a health care professional face to face as they will also need to take your blood pressure and weight. Blood tests may also be requested. This is followed after three months with a follow-up appointment. Online prescribing can only be done once this has happened.
