What is Veoza?
Veoza (medicine name Fezolinetant) reduces the number and intensity of hot flushes and night sweats that are caused by menopause.
Veoza is not a hormone, unlike most other treatments for menopausal symptoms. This can make it a good choice for people who find traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) doesn’t suit them or who prefer not to use hormones.
How do you take Veoza?
Veoza is a small peachy-red round tablet taken once daily, ideally around the same time every day.
Who should NOT use Veoza?
You must tell us during your medical consultation if;
- you have any problems with your liver
- you have any problems with your kidneys
- you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- you currently have or previously had breast cancer or another oestrogen-related cancer
- you are using hormone replacement therapy that contains oestrogen
- you have a history of seizures
You must also tell us about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Veoza can affect how other medicines work, and other medicines can affect how Veoza works.
You must not use Veoza if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, the full list can be found in the patient information leaflet.
Is Veoza available on the NHS?
No, not yet. The appraisal for Veoza has been postponed until late July at the request of Astellas, the medicine manufacturer, to give them time to prepare the best case for Veoza. If this remains the date, we would expect a decision to be made in August or September 2024.
New UK medicines must first be approved by the MHRA, the regulatory body for the safety and effectiveness of medicines. They check that a new medicine is safe for humans, that the medicine does what the manufacturer claims it does, and how well it does this.
MHRA standards are incredibly strict and it takes a lot of time and work for them to approve a medicine for use in the UK.
The MHRA approved Veoza for use in the UK in mid-December 2023.
Once a medicine is approved by the MHRA, it can be assessed by NICE, the regulatory body which decides if it can be used by the NHS.
NICE does review the safety and effectiveness information but not in as much detail. They focus more on balancing the cost of the medicine against how many people in the UK it could help and how much it could help them. They also look at whether there are already similar medicines available.
