Acne is normal amongst teenagers and young people and is linked to changes in hormones during puberty, the menstrual cycle or pregnancy. If your parents had spots, then you are likely to get spots. Acne is caused when the glands in the skin produce an oily substance, which blocks hair follicles, leading to blackheads and whiteheads. There is nothing to suggest that acne is caused by poor hygiene, eating different foods or sexual activity.
So how can you treat and prevent acne?
- Wash the area twice a day with a mild soap or cleanser
- Do not scrub as this causes irritation
- Control spots with creams, lotions and gels
- If you get nodules or cysts, they need to be treated to stop scarring
- Do not squeeze or pick spots as this can lead to scars
- Be patient as treatments can take up to 3 months
