The Different Brands of Sildenafil

When presented with a different choice of medications that may meet your needs, it can be easy to get confused between the different brands and how well they work. In general terms, when a medicine, such as Viagra, comes onto the market, it has a patent. This means that other pharmaceuticals can’t create their own version of the drug until the patent expires; it also means that, for that period of time, people associate the drug and its purpose with the brand name. Once the patent expires, as Viagra’s did in 2013, other pharmaceutical companies are free to create their own non-branded (generic) alternatives containing the same active ingredient (in the case of Viagra, Sildenafil citrate). 

Other examples of branded drugs that have become synonymous with the active ingredient are Calpol and Nurofen. Just as non-branded infant paracetamol has the same effect as Calpol and supermarket ibuprofen is the same as Nurofen, generic Viagra brands such as Sildenafil Teva, Sildenafil Accord and Sildenafil Sandoz have the same impact as the branded Viagra and Viagra connect, because they all have the same active ingredient: Sildenafil citrate.

Are All Brands of Sildenafil the Same?

When the patent for Viagra Pfizer (sildenafil) came to an end, generic equivalents of the popular (and expensive) drug appeared on the market. Aside from Viagra Connect and  Eropid (generic Viagra Connect), which are only available in 50mg doses, all Sildenafil brands are available in 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg tablets.

Different Appearances of Each Brand of Sildenafil

In general terms, the biggest difference between the different Viagra brands is that generic Sildenafil tablets tend to be significantly cheaper than the Viagra brand. Although these drugs may vary in dosage, pill appearance and texture, packaging, and cost, they all contain exactly the same active ingredient – Sildenafil citrate – which means that they will work in the same way. However, some people may find some brands harder to swallow than others, so prefer to stick with the brand whose texture, shape and taste is most palatable to them.

Is There a Preferred Sildenafil Brand Preference?

Brand preference is the same for different Viagra brands as it is for all products including cosmetics, drinks and types of food: everyone is different and although there may be minimal difference between two or more brands, people show a preference or loyalty to a particular brand. Some may choose to stick with the brand that they are familiar with. Others may opt for the cheapest – which is usually one of the generic Viagra names. For some, money may not be an influencing factor, but convenience is; they are more likely to opt for Viagra Connect or Eropid, which don’t require a prescription.

What Is the Price Difference Between Generic Sildenafil and Viagra?

Just as most leading brand products cost more, generic Viagra brands tend to be cheaper than Viagra itself. As always, non-branded, larger volumes of products will be cheaper per unit than branded, smaller amounts.
