What is Intrarosa?
Intrarosa contains the active substance prasterone. It is a hormone-based product that is inserted into the vagina to treat hormonal imbalances during perimenopause and menopause. This can cause vaginal dryness with symptoms including discomfort, itching, and pain during intercourse. Reducing hormones can also cause urinary symptoms such as urinary tract infections, urgency, and occasional leakage.
What is Intrarosa used for?
It is prescribed for postmenopausal women experiencing moderate to severe vulvar and vaginal atrophy symptoms. It is used to treat vaginal symptoms associated with menopause, such as dryness and discomfort. It is caused by a reduction in oestrogen levels in the body. This occurs naturally after menopause.
How does Intrarosa work?
This treatment is manufactured from a plant-derived version of DHEA mixed with coconut and palm oil. DHEA is a hormone naturally produced by the body. When inserted into the vagina, this hormone is released and converted into both estrogen and testosterone.
Prasterone replaces the estrogen produced by the ovaries before menopause, helping to alleviate symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy. The device goes into the vagina and releases hormones where needed, reducing discomfort in that area.
The pessary dissolves to lubricate and improve the affected vagina and surrounding tissues, providing relief from symptoms.

All hormone replacement therapy should be initiated after a discussion with a health care professional face to face as they will also need to take your blood pressure and weight. Blood tests may also be requested. This is followed after three months with a follow-up appointment. Online prescribing can only be done once this has happened.
