What is Cetirizine?
Cetirizine is an H1 histamine inhibitor used to treat allergy symptoms, it works by blocking histamine receptors in different parts of the body so histamines can't activate them to cause symptoms like sneezing or runny nose and eyes.
Cetirizine Hydrochloride 10mg comes in a daily dose tablet form.
Cetirizine is suitable for use by adults and children over 12 years of age. Cetirizine also comes as a Cetirizine Liquid.
What is Cetirizine used for?
Cetirizine tablets are used to treat the associated symptoms of the following types of allergies:
- grass and tree pollen (hay fever)
- house dust mites
- foods, such as peanuts, eggs and milk (food allergy)
- animals, particularly pets like dogs and cats
Allergy symptoms

How long does Cetirizine take to work?
Cetirizine effects can begin anywhere from 20 – 60 minutes. By one hour it will reach peak effectiveness and last up to 24 hours.
Long term use with Cetirizine
We recommend that you take antihistamines for only as long as you need to, normally those suffering from seasonal allergies, such as hay fever due to pollen counts, will only take them during hay fever season. It is also a good idea to start taking antihistamines 2-4 weeks before you expect your hay fever symptoms to start, this is for best protection.
Even though it's unlikely that these allergy tablets will do you any harm, we advise you to talk to your doctor if you need to take them long-term (every day for a year or more).
