Wegovy Drug Interactions: What medications can you take with Wegovy?

Medications can interact with one another when they are taken together, and this can potentially change how well they work, or increase your risk of experiencing side effects.

In England, around 1 in 20 hospital admissions has been linked to an adverse reaction to a medicine, highlighting why understanding these interactions is important to ensure that drugs, including those for weight loss, are used safely and effectively (1).

Always tell your prescriber about any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements that you are taking before starting Wegovy, or any other weight loss medication.

What medications are safe to take with Wegovy?

Semaglutide slows gastric emptying, which means it has the potential to change how quickly medicines taken by mouth are absorbed. This is why healthcare professionals may need to consider potential interactions when semaglutide is taken alongside other oral medicines (2).

Many common medicines can be taken with Wegovy, but the term “safe” depends on your health conditions, dose and other medicines that you use. In clinical studies, semaglutide did not cause any clinically relevant interactions with a range of commonly prescribed oral medicines. Some of these included (2):

  • Blood pressure medicines, including ACE inhibitors, ARBs and calcium-channel blockers

  • Cholesterol-lowering medicines including statins

  • Thyroid replacement treatments, although thyroid blood tests may be required to monitor function as weight changes may affect the dose that you need

  • Common painkillers, antibiotics and antidepressants

What medications should not be taken with Wegovy?

You should not use Wegovy together with any other medicine containing semaglutide (such as Ozempic), or with another GLP-1 receptor agonist (such as Saxenda or Tirzepatide). Combining them has not been shown to have any benefit on weight loss, and may increase side effects, particularly common ones like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration (3).

You should also speak to your prescriber before taking Wegovy if you are taking Warfarin or another blood thinning medication. While semaglutide has not been shown to meaningfully change Warfarin exposure, the SmPC recommends more frequent monitoring if you are taking this or a similar medication (2).

For best practice, we recommend disclosing all medications, over-the-counter treatments, supplements or herbal remedies that you take to your prescribing clinician before you start taking Wegovy.

What vitamins and supplements should you take on Wegovy?

There is no evidence that taking Wegovy needs a routine vitamin or supplement, or that Wegovy causes any specific vitamin or mineral deficiency. However, a reduced appetite, smaller portions, and episodes of nausea/vomiting can make it harder for some people to meet their nutritional needs.

NICE guidelines have specifically highlighted that iron, folate, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies are frequently found in people living with obesity (4). There are also some other vitamins and supplements that you may like to consider while taking Wegovy.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency is common in the general population, especially in winter, so eating less can make it even harder to get enough vitamin D through your diet (5). Vitamin D supplements could help boost your natural intake, which is important for helping your body to absorb calcium to keep your bones, teeth and muscles strong.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is involved in helping your body to make red blood cells, release energy from food and use folate properly. Good sources include meat, fish, milk, cheese and eggs. However, if you’re eating less than normal, particularly if you are vegetarian or vegan, you may be B12 deficient and could benefit from vitamin b12 deficiency treatment.

Iron and folate

Often confused with one another, iron is an essential mineral while folate is a B-vitamin. Both are required to make healthy red blood cells and prevent anaemia. However, too much iron can be dangerous so you should only take folate or iron supplements if you have been diagnosed as deficient (7).

Calcium

Calcium is essential for bone and muscle health and is found in milk, cheese and other dairy food, as well as some leafy green vegetables and anything made with fortified flour. Most people can get enough through their diet, but if your dietary intake is inadequate, supplements may be advised by your GP.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral that helps turn the food you eat into energy, and can be found in spinach, nuts and wholemeal bread. Although it is not routinely required, it can be difficult to get enough if you have a very restricted diet (9).

The importance of protein on Wegovy

When taking Wegovy, getting enough protein is a particularly important part of your weight loss journey. This is because rapid weight loss, particularly like that seen when using weight loss medications like Wegovy, often causes you to lose lean muscle mass as well as body fat. Including good sources of protein, along with doing regular resistance exercises, can help you to maintain lean muscle (10).

There are no supplements that can take the place of protein, but you can find it in foods including fresh, unprocessed meat, milk, yoghurt, cheese, eggs, Quorn, tofu, nuts, beans and more (11).

Wegovy medication interaction FAQs

Can I take painkillers (ibuprofen/naproxen/paracetamol) with Wegovy?

There are no known interactions between Wegovy and routine pain relief. However, ibuprofen and naproxen can irritate the stomach and, if you are vomiting, diarrhoeic or dehydrated, can increase the risk of kidney problems; use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time and ask a pharmacist or clinician if symptoms persist. If you are being prescribed any pain medicine, you should disclose your Wegovy use to your prescriber (3).

Can I take antibiotics (amoxicillin/doxycycline) with Wegovy?

There are also no known interactions between Wegovy and antibiotics. However, it is still important to mention that you are on Wegovy when you are prescribed antibiotics. Always finish the course.

Can I take Wegovy on blood thinners?

It depends on the blood thinner. Semaglutide did not have a clinically meaningful effect on warfarin exposure or INR in an interaction study; yet more frequent INR checks are recommended when starting semaglutide for people taking warfarin or related coumarin anticoagulants. Do not stop or adjust warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran or another anticoagulant without advice from your healthcare professional (2).

Can I take Wegovy with Sertraline?

Sertraline does not have a known direct interaction with Wegovy, and many people use both. However, nausea, diarrhoea, appetite changes and fatigue can occur with either medicine, particularly when starting or changing doses, so speak with your prescriber if these become difficult to manage or your mood changes. (2)

Can I take other GLP-1s with Wegovy?

No. Do not take Wegovy with another GLP-1 receptor agonist, or another semaglutide product. If you are switching treatments, your prescriber should give you a specific plan rather than overlapping injections (2).

If you would like more advice about drug interactions while taking Wegovy, speak to your prescriber.
