If you are on the 7.2mg dose of Wegovy, or are thinking of increasing your dose from 2.4mg to 7.2mg, there’s a new way to administer the full 7.2mg dose. Novo Nordisk (Wegovy manufacturer) is releasing a new 7.2mg single-dose device.
Previously, reaching a weekly 7.2mg dose meant taking three separate 2.4mg injections. The new single-dose pen delivers the same total weekly dose in one injection, making treatment simpler to manage.
If you’ve recently switched to the new 7.2mg Wegovy single-dose pen, the medicine itself hasn’t changed. You’re still taking Semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy) 7.2mg once weekly.

What’s changed with the new pen?
The medication is identical, only the device has changed.
FlexTouch pens were designed around Wegovy doses up to 2.4mg. When 7.2mg became available, reaching this dose meant taking three separate injections on the same day each week, attaching a new needle each time and sometimes switching between pens.
The new single-dose pen delivers the full weekly 7.2mg dose of Semaglutide in one step (1). There’s no needle attachment, no dose selection, and no need to track partially used pens across the month. Simply use one pen once per week and dispose of it afterwards.
What comes in the box?
Inside the box is everything you need for one month of treatment: four single-use pens, each delivering a weekly 7.2mg dose. There are no separate needles included. Each pen has a needle already built in, so there’s nothing to attach before injecting or removing afterwards.
If you’re used to the previous routine of taking three 2.4mg injections each week, you’ll notice there’s much less equipment to manage. The new format provides everything you need in one box of four pens instead of three packs of pens and 12 disposable needles per month.
How do I use the new single-dose Wegovy pen?
Although switching to a new device can feel unfamiliar, most people find the single-dose pen simple to use. The steps below show you how to inject your weekly dose confidently (2).
Check the pen label. Make sure the medicine is in date and that the pen says Wegovy 7.2mg. This is particularly important if you still have FlexTouch pens at home from earlier stages of treatment, as the devices look similar but deliver different doses.
Look through the viewing window. The solution inside should be clear and colourless. If the solution looks cloudy, coloured, or contains particles, do not use the pen.
Choose your injection site. You can inject Wegovy into your abdomen, the front of your thigh, or your upper arm. You can use the same body area each week, but try to choose a slightly different spot each time to reduce any irritation.
Remove the pen cap. You don’t need to attach a needle. It is built into the device and stays hidden before, during, and after the injection.
Press the pen flat against your skin. You’ll need to apply firm pressure, as this is what initiates the injection. You should see the yellow bar begin to move as the injection starts, and you may hear a click. If this doesn’t happen, press the pen more firmly against your skin.
Hold the pen in place until the yellow bar has stopped moving and you hear a second click. This takes 5–10 seconds and confirms the dose has been delivered. The injection can’t be paused, so removing the pen too early may mean you don’t get your full dose.
Once the yellow bar has stopped moving, remove the pen from your skin. The needle cover locks automatically after the injection. If you are blind or have reduced vision, the pen should only be used with help from someone trained to support you with injections.
Dispose of the pen safely. Each pen contains a single dose and should be disposed of after use. You don’t need to remove the needle.

What if I’m switching from the three-injection routine?
If you’ve previously been taking three 2.4mg injections each week using FlexTouch pens, moving to the single-dose pen is straightforward.
You’re still receiving the same total weekly dose of Semaglutide, so there’s no need to restart from a lower dose or repeat the escalation schedule. Most people simply switch to the new pen on their next scheduled injection day.
If you still have partially used 2.4mg FlexTouch pens at home, check with your prescriber before continuing to use them, as some people are advised to finish their current supply first.
Why would I be prescribed the 7.2mg Wegovy pen?
The 7.2mg pen is usually prescribed for adults who have already reached the standard 2.4mg maintenance dose but need extra support with their weight loss.
In clinical trials, people taking the higher dose lost more weight on average, so some patients may be advised to increase their dose if they’ve tolerated lower doses well (3). Your prescriber will only recommend the 7.2mg pen after you’ve completed the dose escalation using FlexTouch pens.
Is storage different from the FlexTouch pen?
Before use, the 7.2mg single-dose pen should be stored in the fridge (2–8°C) in its original carton.
If needed, a pen can be kept out of the fridge for up to 28 days below 30°C, for example when travelling. After this time, it should not be used. This is slightly different from the 2.4mg FlexTouch pen, which could be kept at room temperature for 6 weeks.
Even though FlexTouch pens are no longer delivered in cold-chain (with ice packs), the single-dose pen will still be delivered cold. This does not mean that it is a different medication, it’s simply because of the new pen design.
The unopened shelf life of the new pre-filled pen is also shorter (2 years instead of 3 years), although this rarely affects day-to-day treatment (1,4).
How should I dispose of the new 7.2mg Wegovy pen?
Each 7.2mg Wegovy pen is single-use and automatically locks immediately after your injection, with the needle covered inside the device. Even with the needle covered, injection pens should not be placed in household waste.
You will receive guidance on how to dispose of your pen when sent the single-dose device.
What happens if I miss a dose?
If you forget to take your injection, don’t panic. Missing the occasional dose shouldn’t affect your overall treatment or progress.
If you remember within five days, take the missed dose as soon as you can and then continue with your next injection on your usual day. For example, if your normal injection day is Monday but you remember on Thursday, take the missed dose then and continue the following Monday.
If more than five days have passed since your missed dose, skip it and take your next injection on your usual scheduled day instead. Do not take two doses at the same time or take weight loss injections too close together to make up for a missed one.
