How much do Mounjaro injections cost?

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is one of the most popular prescription weight loss treatments in the UK. The cost of Mounjaro depends on the strength prescribed. Treatment has a usually begins at a low dose and you increase your Mounjaro dose gradually, so the monthly cost rises as you move through the dosing schedule (1).

How much do Wegovy injections cost?

Wegovy (Semaglutide) is another weight loss injection. Like Mounjaro, treatment starts at a low dose and follows a dose escalation schedule, meaning the cost of treatment changes over time. As with Mounjaro, one pen provides enough medicine for one month of treatment (2).

Below you can find the current cost of Wegovy at Oxford Online Pharmacy. As you can see, the 2.4mg pen is also available as a two-pack for a slight discount.

How much do weight loss tablets cost?

Several weight loss tablets are available in the UK, ranging from lower-strength pharmacy treatments like Orlos and Alli to prescription-only medications like Wegovy pill, Orlistat and MySimba. The cost varies depending on the product, strength, brand name, and pack size purchased.

Wegovy Pill prices

The Wegovy pill contains Semaglutide, the same active ingredient in Wegovy injections, which reduces appetite and stomach emptying and increases feelings of fullness. It can be a good alternative for people who do not want to use Wegovy injections or prefer tablets.

Orlistat and Xenical prices

Orlistat and Xenical both contain 120mg of Orlistat, a prescription-only medication that works by reducing the amount of fat your body absorbs from food (3). Xenical is the branded version, while Orlistat is the generic version. Branded medicines are sold under a manufacturer's trademarked name, while generic medicines contain the same active ingredient and strength but are sold under the drug's chemical name once the original patent expires, usually at a lower cost.

Orlos and Alli prices

Orlos and Alli both contain 60mg of Orlistat, making them lower-strength alternatives to prescription-strength Orlistat and Xenical (3). While they contain the same active ingredient and strength, prices can vary between brands.

MySimba Prices

Unlike the Orlistat-based weight loss tablets above, Mysimba works on areas of the brain involved in appetite, cravings, and reward (4). It is only available in a pack of 112 tablets.

Treatment starts by taking one tablet each day and increasing until you’re taking two every morning and evening, so the cost will increase during the first few weeks. Once you reach maintenance, the 112 tablets will last a month.

Which is the cheapest weight loss medication?

When comparing costs, it's important to look at the monthly treatment cost rather than simply the pack price. Some come as monthly injections, while others are sold in larger packs of tablets.

It also helps to compare the price you’ll be paying once you’re settled on treatment. Starting prices can be useful, but they don't always reflect the long-term cost. Many medications have different strengths, dose-escalation schedules, or larger pack sizes that offer better value. Equally, cost depends also on your level of weight loss and how long you may take treatment for, so this can vary widely.

Are weight loss tablets cheaper than injections?

Based on the monthly cost at maintenance doses for the weight loss medicines currently licensed in the UK, weight loss tablets like Orlos, Orlistat, Alli and Xenical are cheaper than weight loss injections. Orlos is currently the cheapest option available at approximately £19.64 per month. However, the Wegovy pill is currently more expensive at maintenance dose (25mg) than Wegovy 2.4mg injection, but cheaper than Wegovy 7.2mg injection and Mounjaro 15mg.

When considering treatment or injections vs tablets, it is also useful to look at the cost from starter dose to maintenance to see the overall cost on a certain weight loss treatment. If you add up the prices of each dose increase for Wegovy injections, Mounjaro and Wegovy pills, assuming you spend only a month on each dose, your full treatment on:

• Wegovy pills (1.5mg to 25mg) will cost you £497.84 with discount WL15

• Wegovy injections (0.25mg to 2.4mg) will cost you £625.80 with discount WL15

• Wegovy injections (0.25mg to 7.2mg) will cost you £890.79 with discount WL15

• This is a good way to analyse cost beyond just the cost of a starter dose, as higher doses of certain treatments can be cheaper than others.
