What to eat on Wegovy

healthy food

If you’re struggling to lose weight through diet and exercise, Wegovy can help. Starting a weight loss medication doesn’t replace a healthy diet, though. What you eat on Wegovy still matters for losing weight, making sure you get the nutrients you need, and managing side effects.

There is no special "Wegovy diet", but aim for a lower-calorie diet filled with fruit and vegetables, higher-fibre carbohydrates and good sources of protein (1-3). You don't need to completely cut out bread, pasta, chocolate or other foods you enjoy, but eat them in moderation.

In this article, we explain more about what to eat on Wegovy, which foods you may want to limit and how to adapt your diet if Wegovy changes your appetite or makes you feel sick.

What should I eat on Wegovy?

There are no specific foods you need to eat when taking Wegovy, whether it's the Wegovy injection or Wegovy pill. But you should build your meals around three important food groups (2-4):

  • Fruit and vegetables

  • Quality proteins

  • High-fibre carbs

Eating a reduced-calorie diet on Wegovy is also important for weight loss (1). Reducing calories does not mean cutting out entire food groups or trying to eat as little as possible. Instead, try to eat smaller portions and make them as nutritionally balanced as possible (2-4).

Not every meal needs to be perfect, but a good rule of thumb for main meals is to fill (4):

  • Half your plate with vegetables or salad

  • A quarter with a source of protein, such as chicken, fish, eggs, beans, lentils or tofu

  • A quarter with higher-fibre carbohydrates, such as wholegrain bread or brown rice

  • Include a small amount of healthy fats, such as olive oil, nuts, seeds, or avocado

Below are some simple ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for inspiration.

What should I eat for breakfast on Wegovy?

For breakfast, try to include both a source of protein and fibre. This could be as simple as:

  • Porridge with milk, berries and a spoonful of Greek yoghurt

  • Eggs on wholegrain toast with tomatoes or spinach

  • Greek yoghurt with fruit, oats and a few nuts or seeds

  • Overnight oats with Greek yoghurt and banana

  • Wholegrain toast topped with cottage cheese and tomatoes

Please note: If you are taking the Wegovy pill, you need to wait 30 minutes after taking your tablet before you eat breakfast.

What should I eat for lunch on Wegovy?

Sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads can all work well, as long as they include protein and vegetables. For example:

  • Chicken and salad in a wholemeal wrap

  • Lentil or bean soup with wholegrain bread

  • Tuna and bean salad

  • Baked potato with cottage cheese and salad

  • Hummus, roasted vegetables and wholegrain pitta

What should I eat for dinner on Wegovy?

Dinner is a great opportunity to use the half vegetables, quarter protein and quarter higher-fibre carbohydrates guide above. That could look like:

  • Grilled salmon with new potatoes, broccoli and peas

  • Chicken stir-fry with plenty of vegetables and brown rice

  • Lentil and bean chilli with rice and a side salad

  • Tofu with stir-fried vegetables and noodles

  • Lean beef or turkey bolognese with wholewheat pasta and vegetables

  • Chickpea and vegetable curry with rice

What snacks can I eat on Wegovy?

You may find you snack less often on Wegovy because you aren't as hungry between meals. You don't need to snack if you're not hungry (4). If you do get peckish, healthy options include:

  • A piece of fruit

  • Greek yoghurt

  • A boiled egg

  • Vegetable sticks with hummus

  • A small handful of unsalted nuts

  • Cottage cheese with fruit

  • Wholegrain crackers with a small amount of cheese

What should I not eat on Wegovy?

While taking Wegovy, it’s best to eat foods high in calories, saturated fat or added sugar less often and in smaller amounts (3). Try to limit foods like (3,4):

  • Fried and fast foods, such as fried chicken, chips and takeaways

  • Sugary foods like cakes, biscuits, sweets, chocolate and ice cream

  • Sugary drinks, such as full-sugar fizzy drinks and energy drinks

  • High-fat foods like pastries and pies, crisps and sausage rolls

  • Processed meats, such as bacon, hot dogs and corned beef

  • Alcoholic drinks on Wegovy, which are high in calories and low in nutrients

These foods are not completely banned while taking Wegovy. Having pizza or chocolate occasionally will not stop Wegovy from working, but eating them regularly can make it harder to keep your diet balanced and reduce your calorie intake.

Fried and high-fat foods can also be harder to tolerate if Wegovy is making you feel sick and bloated or giving you heartburn (5). If you notice a particular food makes your Wegovy side effects worse, try reducing it or avoiding it until your symptoms settle.

There are also other ways to manage nausea, constipation, and other common symptoms, including changes to how and what you eat. Read more in our guide to Wegovy side effects.

Do you still enjoy food on Wegovy?

You can still enjoy food on Wegovy, but your relationship with food may change.

Studies have found that Semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy) can reduce food cravings and may reduce the rewarding pull of food (1,6,7). These effects on the brain's reward system are also why researchers are investigating Wegovy as a potential treatment for addiction.

Food doesn’t necessarily taste worse, and you’ll likely still enjoy it when you eat it, but foods you previously found difficult to resist may feel easier to say no to. You might still really enjoy a biscuit, but feel satisfied after one or two rather than wanting to finish the whole pack.

There are a couple of reasons that food itself might become less enjoyable, though:

  • Altered taste is a recognised side effect of Semaglutide (1), so some foods may genuinely taste different from how you remember them and no longer appeal to you in the same way.

  • Side effects can temporarily take some of the joy out of eating. Nausea, vomiting or indigestion may understandably make you less interested in food. As your body adjusts to treatment, these side effects often settle and eating becomes easier again (1,5).

Talk to your prescriber if you regularly have no appetite and have lost all enjoyment in eating. They can review your treatment, make sure you’re on the right Wegovy dose for you, and adjust your Wegovy dosage if necessary.

Can you overeat on Wegovy?

You can overeat on Wegovy. Overeating means eating more food or calories than you need.

Because of how Wegovy works in the body to reduce appetite and slow digestion, eating too much at once may feel uncomfortable and could make side effects worse (1,5). But Wegovy only reduces the urge to eat. It doesn’t physically stop you from overeating.

Many people do find their portion sizes naturally become smaller, although changes to your appetite and cravings may not happen in your first month on Wegovy. How long Wegovy takes to work varies, and the effects often become more noticeable as treatment progresses.

You can also overeat without overdoing portion sizes. Some foods have lots of calories in a small serving, so you could eat portions that feel relatively small and comfortable but still consume more calories than your body needs. You need a calorie deficit for weight loss (8).

This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to count calories on a GLP-1, but it does reinforce that what you eat on Wegovy matters, even if you're eating less food overall.

To avoid overeating on Wegovy (2-4):

  • Start with smaller portions. You can always have more if you're still hungry.

  • Stop when you feel comfortably full. Don't feel you need to finish what's on your plate.

  • Eat slowly. Give yourself time to notice when you're becoming full.

  • Choose filling foods like protein and high-fibre carbs in your meals.

Even with a balanced, reduced-calorie diet, weight loss can sometimes slow or stop for a while. If this happens, there are steps you can take to overcome a weight loss plateau.

Can you eat too little on Wegovy?

It is possible to eat too little on Wegovy. Wegovy is supposed to reduce hunger signals, but some people find their appetite becomes so low that they struggle to eat at all (1).

Do not deliberately try to eat as little as possible. Regularly eating very little can make it harder to get the nutrients your body needs. It may leave you feeling tired or weak and increase the amount of muscle you lose alongside body fat (2).

You may not be eating enough if you:

  • Regularly skip meals because you have no appetite

  • Struggle to finish even small portions

  • Regularly feel weak, dizzy or unusually tired

  • Are concerned that you are losing weight very quickly

  • Find it difficult to eat a varied diet because you can manage so little food

Smaller meals or snacks throughout the day may make it easier to eat well when you’re not hungry than three larger meals (4,5). Prioritise nutritious foods when you do eat, particularly protein to help preserve muscle while you lose weight (2).

If your appetite is so low that you are regularly unable to eat, speak to your prescriber.

Wegovy diet plan

There is no official diet plan you need to follow on Wegovy. The goal is something that:

  • You can comfortably stick to while losing weight

  • Gives you the nutrition you need, including enough protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals

  • Includes foods you actually enjoy and want to eat

  • Isn't overly restrictive or based on cutting out entire food groups (2,3,8)

The Wegovy diet plan below is an example of what this could look like. Adjust the portion sizes to your appetite and individual calorie needs, and don't feel that you have to eat every meal or snack simply because it's included in the plan.

How to use the Wegovy diet plan

This is a general example meal plan for Wegovy. Everyone's nutritional and calorie needs are different depending on factors such as age, body size, activity levels and health. Your appetite and how well you tolerate different foods on Wegovy will also be individual to you.

Use the plan for inspiration rather than trying to follow it exactly:

  • Swap foods you don't like. You don't need to eat salmon because it's Tuesday. Swap proteins, vegetables and carbohydrates for similar foods you actually enjoy.

  • Move meals around. There's no reason you have to eat a particular meal on a particular day. Use what you have in the fridge and repeat meals you enjoy eating.

  • Adapt meals around side effects. When side effects are bothering you, smaller, simpler meals may be easier to manage (5). Return to your usual meals once symptoms improve.

  • Don't deliberately make the plan more restrictive. Skipping meals or cutting portions won't necessarily give better results and could make it harder to get the nutrition you need (2,8).

Just as there isn't one diet that works for everyone taking Wegovy, treatment isn't one-size-fits-all either. At Oxford Online Pharmacy, our clinical team will assess whether Wegovy is suitable for you and prescribe the appropriate dose, with support available throughout your treatment.

Wegovy diet FAQs

Can I drink coffee on Wegovy?

Yes, you can drink coffee while taking Wegovy if you want to. If coffee seems to worsen nausea, indigestion or other stomach symptoms, try drinking less or switching to a decaffeinated version until your side effects have improved. If you are taking the Wegovy pill, it’s essential to wait 30 minutes after taking your tablet before drinking coffee.

Can I eat bread on Wegovy?

Yes, you can eat bread while taking Wegovy, but swap white bread for wholegrain and higher-fibre breads. What you eat your bread with is also important. Pair it with a source of protein and vegetables to make a balanced plate, such as eggs and tomatoes on toast or a chicken salad sandwich.

What fruits can I eat on Wegovy?

You can eat any fruit on Wegovy, including bananas, grapes, berries, apples and watermelon. Eating a variety is best, as different fruits contain different vitamins and minerals (3). You can have fruit juice and smoothies too, but these are high in free sugar and should be limited to 150ml per day (2).

Can I eat cheese on Wegovy?

Yes, cheese can be part of your diet while taking Wegovy and provides both protein and calcium. But many cheeses are also high in saturated fat and salt, so how much cheese you eat matters. If you eat cheese regularly, consider low-fat options or cottage cheese.

Can I eat carbs on Wegovy?

Yes. You do not need to cut out carbohydrates while taking Wegovy. Foods such as bread, potatoes, rice, pasta and oats can all form part of a healthy, reduced-calorie diet. Where possible, choose higher-fibre versions like brown rice and wholewheat pasta, or eat potatoes with their skins on.

Can I eat chocolate on Wegovy?

You can eat chocolate on Wegovy, as long as it is an occasional treat rather than something that makes up a large part of your diet. Chocolate is generally high in calories, fat and sugar, so too much can make it harder for you to be in the calorie deficit needed to lose weight (3,8).

How many calories should I eat on Wegovy?

There isn't one calorie target that everyone taking Wegovy should follow. How many calories you need depends on your age, body size, activity levels and health. The aim is to eat fewer calories than your body uses while still getting enough protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals (2,8).

Can you eat spicy food on Wegovy?

Yes, you can eat spicy food on Wegovy if it doesn't cause you any problems. However, spicy foods may make digestive side effects such as heartburn or indigestion worse for some people. If you notice this happening, reduce or avoid spicy foods until your symptoms get better (5).
