What is frovatriptan?
Frovatriptan 2.5mg tablets are a 5-HT(1B/1D) receptor agonist, also commonly known under the brand name Migard and is used to treat migraines - intense headaches that may cause nausea and heightened sensitivity to light and sound.
It works by relieving symptoms and is intended for use only when you experience migraine symptoms, rather than being taken on a regular basis to prevent or reduce their frequency.
Frovatriptan belongs to a class of medications known as Triptans, specifically formulated to alleviate migraine headaches.
These medications are not suitable for and do not work on other types of headaches or pain. If you're unsure whether you suffer from migraines or a different type of headache, consult one of our healthcare professionals for advice. You can find more information on migraines here.
Frovatriptan vs sumatriptan
Both being triptans that work in a similar way, you are probably wondering if there are any differences. Well, according to the findings of a study: While the likelihood of headache recurrence is reduced with frovatriptan compared to sumatriptan, it is not as effective as sumatriptan in providing headache relief at 2 and 4 hours after taking the 2.5mg oral dose.
How does frovatriptan work?
The exact cause of migraines is not fully understood, but they are believed to be triggered by specific factors, such as stress, fatigue, menstrual cycles, or certain foods and drinks. Once triggered, abnormal brain activity temporarily alters nerves, blood vessels, and chemicals in the brain.
Triptans like frovatriptan function by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain, which reduces painful symptoms and constricts blood vessels around the brain, halting the transmission of pain signals.
What are the available doses of frovatriptan?
Frovatriptan is designed as a single-dose treatment, where you should take only one tablet at a time. If this dose of frovatriptan does not alleviate your symptoms, let us know as you may need to try a different treatment.
