What is the difference between Cialis and Tadalafil?
Cialis is the brand name for the drug Tadalafil. These prescription-only tablets are available in once-daily 2.5mg, 5mg strengths, or on-demand 10mg, and 20mg strengths.
Price compare Cialis with our generic Tadalafil.
Is Cialis available without a prescription?
There is an over-the-counter version of Cialis called Cialis Together, these are 10mg tablets available in boxes of 4 or 8.
How does Cialis work?
Cialis is one of a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. These work by increasing the blood flow to the penis when sexually aroused, resulting in an erection that is strong enough and lasts long enough to enjoy sex.
Cialis will not give you instant or uncontrolled erections, you will always need to be sexually aroused. You will also lose your erection after ejaculation (coming) as normal.
Is Cialis the right treatment for me?
Sometimes Cialis can be unsafe to use.
You should consult your doctor or our team before taking Cialis if;
- You take nitrates for a heart condition. These are usually tablets or capsules called Isosorbide Mononitrate or Nicorandil (a medicine very similar to a nitrate) but can be called by other names
- You use poppers (Amyl Nitrate)
- You have angina or have ever been given a spray that goes under your tongue to help chest pain
- You have had a heart attack or stroke within the last three months
- You have a condition called Peyronie’s or your penis has a bend when erect
- You, or anyone in your family, has a history of eye disease, including retinitis pigmentosa or non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION)
- You have liver or kidney problems
- You have sickle-cell disease, multiple myeloma, or leukaemia
- You have a stomach ulcer You have low blood pressure
- You have uncontrolled high blood pressure
Contact us for more information about any of the above, all conversations are confidential and non-judgemental. We also ask specifically about these in our online consultation, be honest and give as much information as you can.
Cialis alternatives
Generic Tadalafil is the same medicine as Cialis, this would be a good alternative for someone who finds Cialis or Cialis together works for them but is looking for something better priced. Generic Tadalafil is available in all the same strengths as Cialis.
If you’re looking for an alternative to Cialis because it doesn’t suit you, another medicine in the same group that works in a similar way is Sildenafil.
It’s important to know that if one medicine from this group hasn’t worked well, that doesn’t mean they all won’t.
More advice about erectile dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is incredibly common and can happen every time you have sex or only sometimes.
It can be caused by something physical like high blood pressure or diabetes so we strongly recommend you get a health check with your usual doctor, especially if you’ve only experienced ED recently. If it all feels too embarrassing, you don’t have to tell them why you’re getting a check-up or mention it only at the end of your appointment.
ED can also be caused by emotional and psychological events like stress, depression or a relationship breakdown. These are recognised and valid causes of sexual dysfunction and can be treated with medicines like Cialis.
Read more about ED and its causes.
When to take Cialis for best results
Cialis 10mg and 20mg tablets should be taken around 30 minutes before sex and stay working for up to 36 hours.
As Cialis keeps working for up to 36 hours, this 30 minutes is not strict, just the minimum. If you take a tablet and don’t have sex for a couple of hours, this is not a problem and you should still achieve an erection as expected.
Cialis 2.5mg and 5mg tablets should be taken once daily every day. This provides a continuous low level of medicine in the body, allowing erections to be spontaneous.
You should not take any other ED medicines within 36 hours of taking Cialis.
How often can I take Cialis?
10mg and 20mg strengths can be taken every 36 hours if needed, they should not be taken more frequently than this. If you use more than two or three Cialis per week we recommend you try the 2.5mg or 5mg daily tablets.
The 2.5mg and 5mg tablets should be taken once daily only. These can take up to two weeks to be fully effective.
How long does Cialis last for?
Cialis stays working in the body for 36 hours, meaning a tablet taken on a Friday night should still work on Sunday morning.

What dose of Cialis do I take?
If you haven’t used Cialis before and want to use it on demand, you should start with 10mg and take it around 30 minutes before sex.
You should only increase to 20mg with a doctor’s agreement and only when the 10mg isn’t working well enough. This would be when erections still aren’t firm enough for sex or stay hard long enough to enjoy sex.
Use 5mg tablets for a spontaneous sex life. These should be taken once a day, every day, regardless of whether you have sex that day or not.
We may recommend you reduce to 2.5mg daily tablets if the 5mg is too strong, meaning erections are uncomfortable.
Side effects of Cialis Tablets
Side effects of Cialis Tablets
What are the side effects of Cialis?
All medicines have side effects, but they tend to happen less as you get used to them.
Only continue if a side effect is mild or manageable.
Common Side Effects
- Headaches
- Flushing
- Runny/stuffed nose
- Upset stomach
- Nausea
- Red and/or warm skin
- Dizziness
- Diarrhoea
- Nose-bleeds
- Muscle pain/Back Pain
The side effects listed below are more serious. If you experience these, you must stop taking Cialis and see a doctor immediately.
An erection that will not go away (priapism). If you have an erection that lasts more than four hours, seek medical help immediately. Priapism can permanently damage your penis.
Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes can indicate a serious eye problem called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Seek medical help immediately.
Some people may also experience a ringing sound in their ears (tinnitus) or dizziness.
-
In some instances, Cialis may remain effective for up to 36 hours, assisting in achieving and sustaining erections during that period. If you take Cialis daily for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or erectile dysfunction (ED), the medication will consistently be present in your system, ensuring it continues to work throughout the day.
-
Avoid consuming grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking Cialis. Grapefruit can elevate the medication's levels in the bloodstream, leading to increased side effects.
-
Moderate alcohol consumption while taking Cialis is generally not expected to cause any side effects. However, excessive alcohol intake can result in harmful interactions. Both Cialis and alcohol function as mild vasodilators, meaning they widen blood vessels, potentially leading to increased blood flow throughout the body.
-
There are no known interactions between Cialis and coffee or other sources of caffeine. It should generally be safe to drink coffee or consume caffeine while taking this medication.
-
No, Viagra does not necessarily produce a stronger erection than Cialis, and vice versa. However, Cialis has a longer duration of action, allowing it to help achieve one or more erections for up to 36 hours. This duration is notably longer than Viagra, which is typically effective for 4-6 hours.
-
Cialis is available on the NHS for men experiencing erectile dysfunction; however, specific criteria must be met to qualify for an NHS prescription.
-
Individuals who have experienced a stroke within the past 6 months should avoid using Cialis. It is essential to inform your doctor about any history of stroke before taking the medication. Additionally, individuals with kidney or liver problems should exercise caution, as their bodies may not metabolize Cialis as rapidly as usual.
-
Opting for daily-use Cialis involves taking a lower dosage compared to as-needed Cialis, which can potentially result in a reduced risk of experiencing medication side effects. Many side effects are less prevalent when Cialis is used on a daily basis.
-
Acquiring Cialis discreetly can be accomplished through an online purchasing process, bypassing the need for an in-person doctor visit. Our online doctors will assess your health condition and issue an electronic prescription. Subsequently, you will receive the medication in discreet packaging, ensuring your privacy.
-
Cialis is often referred to as the "weekend pill" due to its prolonged effectiveness, lasting up to 36 hours, which is longer than other treatments like Viagra/sildenafil, Levitra, or Spedra.
-
Like other ED medications, Cialis isn't available over the counter. However, you don't need a prescription to get the pharmacy line medicine called Cialis together from Oxford Online Pharmacy.
-
As of the present moment, the MHRA has exclusively approved Cialis for men in the UK who are dealing with erectile dysfunction or an enlarged prostate. Its usage is not recommended for women or children.
Some studies have shown that just like its potential effects in men, tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, is believed to enhance blood flow to the genital region in women as well. However, female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a multifaceted issue, encompassing psychological, social, and physical aspects. Consequently, it remains uncertain whether Cialis would effectively tackle elements of FSD, such as sexual desire, arousal, or physical impediments to sexual satisfaction resulting from ageing or other medical conditions.
Since no testing has been conducted on pregnant individuals, the potential risks of Cialis to a developing foetus remain uncertain. Furthermore, it is unclear whether Cialis might be excreted into breast milk, therefore, breastfeeding parents should avoid using Cialis.
-
The main difference between Cialis and Cialis daily is the fact one is taken when needed and the other once daily. Those who want more spontaneity are likely to opt for the 2.5mg and 5mg daily Cialis tablets, whereas those who forget to take tablets every day may benefit from the 10mg and 20mg (when required) Cialis pills.
Cialis has the potential to remain effective for up to 36 hours, assisting in achieving and sustaining erections during that extended period. If you are taking Cialis daily for erectile dysfunction (ED), the medication will consistently remain in your system, ensuring its continuous efficacy throughout the day.
-
Cialis is a highly effective treatment for ED, the active ingredients found in Cialis as well as Viagra, Spedra, and Levitra are fully effective in approximately 70 percent of healthy men. However, this implies that a significant number of men may still experience erection issues despite using these medications.
If you are finding that you are struggling to get or maintain an erection when taking Cialis, it is worth talking to a doctor who may be able to prescribe an alternative treatment for you to try.
