What is Measles, Mumps and Rubella?

Measles

Measles is a highly contagious infection that can lead to severe complications in certain individuals. The most effective way to prevent measles is by receiving the MMR vaccine.

Identifying Measles Symptoms:

Measles typically begins with symptoms resembling a common cold, followed by the emergence of a rash a few days later. Some individuals may also develop small spots in their mouth.

Cold-like Symptoms:

Early symptoms of measles include:

High temperature
Runny or blocked nose
Sneezing
Coughing
Red, sore, watery eyes

Spots in the Mouth:

After a few days, small white spots may appear inside the cheeks and on the back of the lips. These spots generally last for a few days.

The Measles Rash:

Following the initial cold-like symptoms, a rash usually develops within a few days. The rash begins on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body.

The measles rash appears as red, blotchy patches covering a significant portion of the person's arms, chest, and abdomen. In some cases, the spots may be raised and merge together to form larger patches. The rash typically does not cause itchiness.

It is important to note that individuals who have received both doses of the MMR vaccine or have previously had measles are highly unlikely to have measles if they experience similar symptoms.

Mumps

Mumps is characterised by painful swellings beneath the ears, specifically in the parotid glands, resulting in a distinctive appearance often referred to as a "hamster face."

In addition to the visible swelling, mumps may also present other symptoms such as headaches, joint pain, and an elevated body temperature. These symptoms can manifest a few days prior to the swelling of the parotid glands.

Rubella

Rubella, also known as German measles, is a rare illness characterized by a rash consisting of spots. Typically, the condition improves within a week, but it can pose serious risks if contracted during pregnancy.

Identifying Rubella Symptoms:

The primary symptom of rubella is a spotty rash that initially appears on the face or behind the ears and subsequently spreads to the neck and body.

It takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks for the rash to manifest after being infected with rubella.

The rubella rash shows:

On white skin, it presents as hundreds of small pink spots covering the chest.

On light brown skin, faint red blotchy patches cover most of the skin, which may feel rough or bumpy. It can be more challenging to discern the rash on brown or black skin.

Additionally, individuals with rubella might experience swollen glands (lumps) in the neck or behind the ears.

Other symptoms associated with rubella include:

Aching fingers, wrists, or knees
High temperature
Coughing
Sneezing and a runny nose
Headaches
Sore throat
Sore and red eyes
