Is Circadin right for me?

Circadin might be right for you if you are over 55, have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, wake very early, or do not get good quality, deep sleep (restorative sleep), and this is affecting your daily life.

Often, poor sleep (insomnia) can happen at times of stressful life events like relationship breakdowns, illness in a loved one or grief, or during difficult financial or work periods.

If you are unsure what is causing your sleep problems, you can use a short course of Circadin, but we also recommend you see your GP.

If you haven’t used Circadin before, we recommend you start with one box of 30 tablets to see if it works for you. If you have used Circadin before, please let us know in your medical consultation.

What is Circadin?

The medicine in Circadin is Melatonin. Each tablet contains 2mg of Melatonin and has a special “prolonged-release” coating. This means that the medicine is released from the tablet slowly, allowing it to last for a whole night.

Who can take Melatonin?

We supply Melatonin tablets UK for people over 55 who have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting quality deep sleep, which affects their day-to-day lives.

Melatonin tablets might be prescribed for adults under 55 if the prescriber considers them suitable. For more information, contact a member of our healthcare team.

Who should not take Melatonin

You should be careful using Melatonin UK if;

  • You have epilepsy

You should not use Melatonin tablets if;

  • You have an autoimmune disease
  • You take certain other medicines
  • You have liver or kidney problems
  • You have an allergy to any of the ingredients in Circadin tablets (a full list can be found in section 6 of the patient information leaflet) this includes lactose
  • You use other medicines to help you sleep

When should you see a doctor

There are times when Melatonin tablets UK is not the best treatment. Instead, you should speak to your doctor, who may refer you to a sleep clinic where specialists will help you enjoy healthy, restful sleep again.

You should see a doctor if;

  • You wake up with a headache that lasts about an hour most mornings
  • You are very sleepy and tired during the day
  • Someone who sleeps near you notices you stop breathing when sleeping, snoring very loudly or choking and coughing in your sleep
  • You wake in the morning already exhausted, even though you don’t remember being awake much in the night
  • You feel unable to stop moving or twitchy when you go to bed, most often in your legs
  • You have recently started any new medicine
  • You do shift work, particularly night shift work
  • You don’t sleep well because you have frightening, unusual or unpleasant experiences when falling asleep or during the night

How Melatonin works

Melatonin is a hormone produced by your body that increases at night and decreases during the day. It regulates your natural sleep-wake cycle, affecting both the timing and quality of your sleep.

The Melatonin in Circadin boosts your body's natural supply, so you fall asleep more quickly and you're less likely to wake up during the night. It can also help with symptoms of jetlag.

We only supply Melatonin tablets to treat short-term sleep problems in people aged 55 and over. Sometimes, sleep specialists might prescribe Melatonin to help with longer-term sleep problems in children and adults.

If you still do not sleep well during a course of Melatonin UK or the quality of your sleep worsens again after you finish a course, see your GP for more support.

Treatments available through your GP could include other sleep medications, managing medical conditions that could be stopping you feeling sleepy and non-medicine treatments that could promote sleep, like talking therapies.

Ideally, we want to treat the cause of your insomnia rather than relying on medicines.

Where to buy Melatonin in the UK

In other parts of the world, like the USA, Melatonin is available without a prescription in health food shops and pharmacies for adults and children.

This was the same in the UK up until 1995, when the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (MHRA) re-classed Melatonin as a medicine.

It is normal for medicines to be in different classes in other countries. Now, Melatonin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, so it can only be issued by a doctor. If safe and appropriate, our team of online doctors may prescribe it for you so you can buy Melatonin UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Melatonin only for people over 55?

Our bodies begin to make less Melatonin after around this age so only people over 55 years old were included in the medical trials that proved Melatonin works for insomnia. In the wider medical world, we know that Melatonin works for adults of other ages as well as children, but it is not appropriate for us to start treatment for these groups as an online service where we don’t get to know you as personally as your GP would.

Can Melatonin cause headaches?

Some people may get a headache the day after taking Melatonin. This is a recognised unwanted effect and is likely to affect less than 1 in every 100 people but more than 1 in every 1000 people who take Melatonin. Melatonin can be dehydrating for some people, which could cause headaches. Make sure to drink enough water during the day while you are using a course of Melatonin.

Will Melatonin help me stay asleep?

The slow-release coating on a Circadin tablet means a steady amount of Melatonin is released over the whole night. This means it should help you both fall asleep and stay asleep.

What are the other names for Circadin?

The medicine in Circadin is Melatonin. Melatonin is also available under the brand names Adaflex, Ceyesto, Slenyto and Syncrodin.

Can I use Melatonin for jet lag?

Yes, the recommended dose is one tablet each night for up to 5 nights. Circadin can be used at your destination time zone and when you get home.

You should also follow advice for managing jetlag.
